Yeah, but lots more cops around with nothing to do.
This time Burt might not get away...
“The average speed over the shortest route possible between the two points would be approximately 103 mph.”
So breaking speedlimits pretty much the whole way.
2,850 miles
Gumball Rally was a better movie than the Cannonball Run movies.
Its time we all became scofflaws. This lockdown is officially insane. Lets get back to work!!!
“But officer...I wasn’t running from you. I was simply trying to maintain a socially acceptable distance from you.”
Assume those are fuel tanks in the trunk?
Considering normally it would take 4 hrs to drive thru LA, this record will probably stand for awhile.
Drove alongside fancy cars driving into Florida back from an Easter trip to my relatives. Didn’t figure it out until we got home that they were in the Gumball Rally.
If I remember correctly, the Cannonball Run is east to west pre-Easter and Gumball Rally is west to east post-Easter.
The late Brock Yates was the MC & I think an entrant and told the joke about Kamikaze Pilots w/ the punch line being "are you ****ing crazy!" standing in front of me was a fellow 20 something with a Kamikaze bandanna on his head... LOL!
That run was at 55mph and was to see if you could reach the checkpoint at a time that was set so you + or - of that number took you away from your score.
During a break time, (yes they had them) We met up with the racer we knew on the Mass Pike at a Ho-Jo's, as they had a friend with them that I think was his co-driver-pilot, a one Parnelli Jones. I got to meet him, real nice guy.
My best run was in the summer of 1990 from Pittsburgh to San Francisco in two days and 13 hours, solo.
“Not really valid since the roads have far less traffic.”
don’t nitpick.
New York to L.A. in 26 hours and 38 minutes is way cool!
That’s about Geezer time in an Eldorado driving NYC to Naples.
In an A8, probably quite comfy too.
Wonder how long it would take in a Prius? /s
I had to fill up both of my vehicles in early February and now I look at the fuel guages above half and gas hit $1.59 at Kroger early this week. Wish I had an underground tank.
Heres the story about the modified Infiniti that made the run in 26 hours, 28 minutes (airplane lookouts, pre stationed fuel, etc):
I remember the end of a Burt Reynold’s movie where he took a bet he could get to Boston back to Georgia in 18 hours. Didn’t sound do-able.
I prefer “The Gumball Rally” myself. Give me the Ferrari anytime.
The modern run started in 1971 as the ‘Cannonball Baker Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash’, organized by Brock Yates who was writing for Car & Driver magazine at the time. Dan Gurney and Brock Yates drove a Ferrari Daytona to first place.
This is pure awesome. Good for these guys.
It was so bizarre last week to glance at the time as I pulled up to a gas pump in Babylon LI, noting that it was 7:55am, then pulling into Calvary cemetery in Maspeth NYC 35 minutes later! A trip that on a very good day takes an hour and a half and more usually takes 2 to 2 and a half.
