Hundreds of thousands of retail workers are being furloughed or permanently laid off

Hundreds of thousands of retail workers across the US have been furloughed from their jobs until further notice as their employers take drastic measures to cut costs during the coronavirus crisis.

The retail sector has been hit hard over the past few weeks and months, and for conflicting reasons. While grocery chains and food delivery companies are scrambling to meet surging demand, other retail businesses deemed "nonessential" by the government have been forced to shutter stores and are now finding that a large portion of their business has dried up.

Store closures across the country are taking their toll on the people who previously worked in these now-shuttered locations and who now find themselves without a paycheck.

I expect banks and finance to make a killing. Low interest loans backed up by the Fed. Throw in the ability to write off bad loans and or give such loans to .gov. Then the ability to reinvest now at lower stock prices and investments.

There will be a larger divide in America of winners and losers as this continues.

‘Eisenhower did the same thing in the 50s to open the schools.’

that was to end racial segregation of public schools in Arkansas; not happening for this...

Trump can force their hand with an executive order or a memo to the AG. Something like “It is ILLEGAL under the Constitution of the United States to restrict gathering, movement, or to mandate closure of business as a result of the virus”.

I think this is wishful thinking. Trump is against a heavy handed, national approach to this, and after demurring on having a national lockdown, he is not going to turn around and insist on overruling states in how they choose to reopen.

I predict they’ll be bitching up a storm about decreased income and sales tax revenues a few months from now.

I do think that reluctant as he is to mess with Federalism, Trump may have to intervene in order to get the hard-core blue states to turn back on.

The tool he has to do this? The National Defense Production Act. He can just certify that a business is essential to the national defense and order it reopened. He did that to Tom Wolf on gun stores.

The Democrats were the ones who insisted he invoke the act.
Irony. Suck it, Democrats.

STHF phase is on a dark horizon. The left will then pivot and attack at a different angle.

That’s actually a great idea. I would love him using the DPA to force states to reopen restaurants, barber shops, malls, massage parlors and hair salons, just for the schadenfreude of it.

Housing construction is booming in my state. So is commercial construction.

Conservatives need to get a true understanding of liberty in their minds. Now.

There are also people like me who still have income and stable jobs but are spending significantly less to ensure they can survive just in case.

If I hold at my current savings rate and we start reopening in May, I am getting a new large appliance and possibly some furniture, not to mention a haircut and paying for exercise classes once the economy opens again.

We will be right at the cold weather/hot weather wardrobe split so a few pieces of clothing might happen too.

I think there will be enough of a demand for certain items and services to get the wheel started.

If there are some moves like reinvesting in drug production in the U.S. that also occur, we will weather this.

I think there will be some industries affected a year from now and it may kill off some already struggling companies, but many segments will be back to where they were.

the only untouched are the govt workers....the govt shuts down everyone's opportunities and the govt workers get nothing but a vacation....

I'll bet they'll be feasting at the bargaining table claiming how terrible it was to stay home and watch tv...

Yinz all know my idea.

All pay for Federal workers is suspended until the last hairdresser goes back to work.

This would end quicker than you can say Beemer Payment.

Good lord.

The Chi-coms didn’t issue lockdown orders. Nor close ‘non-essential’ businesses, with millions losing their jobs. Nor close parks, beaches, and fine people for violating those edicts. Or belittle potential therapies, and ridicule the President.

It was OUR politicians. Governors, mayors. The Chi-coms didn’t hold a gun to their heads. OUR politicians did this, gladly, and good luck getting them to rescind it.

“....so what we need to do is bring in more H1b, H2b workers”
The left only cares about power.
They really don’t care about Americans unless they hand them a BIG check.
