HARRISBURG, PA All Pennsylvania schools will remain closed for the rest of the academic year due to the coronavirus pandemic, Gov. Tom Wolf announced Thursday.
The governor said he made the decision in consultation with Secretary of Health Rachel Levine and Secretary of Education Pedro Rivera.
Schools had been closed since March 13 due to the outbreak, which has killed more than 300 Pennsylvania residents.

Sure is. Our county government is also Dem majority. Yesterday they were threatening to close down county trails. It seems we're not complying well enough with distancing. Closing trails is punitive and controlling but doesn't do anything to increase distance. I should check on whether they're stocking up on plywood and nails to board us up in our homes.
Pennsylvanians are generally pretty balanced in demeanor, but I hear more people expressing irritation. The governor also decreed mask wearing in public, but I am not seeing great compliance with it. I smell a low-level rebellion brewing.
PAY BACK 1/3 OF SCHOOL TAXES
They should, but it might take the Republicans in the State House reminding him about it. He initially closed gun shops, but then re-opened them with safe distancing guidelines. In any case, there are worms in the yard and minnows in the creeks.
Actually, I was thinking mainly about some manufacturers. The auto industry, for example, is going to have a very slow recovery — because people simply aren’t going to feel confident enough to buy a new car for a long time.
Around here a lot of restaurants are limiting the damage by doing take out/delivery. People are ordering food for delivery to hospitals, police departments, etc. There are also a lot of small businesses here selling gift cards to generate cash flow during the gap. I've pre-paid my hair appointment (scheduled remotely for May), and supported an online concert by a local folk music duo. People are being pretty innovative and supportive of local businesses. I think most are still OK but we need to get things going soon.
And aint it against the law to pay public employees for not working?
I feel sorry for youngsters who are missing out on proms and school trips this year.
Some of the car companies are sharpening their pencils. We need to replace one of our vehicles and hope to take advantage of this. It's a balancing act. If we wait too long, they'll be short of inventory due to factory shutdown.
The rest of the year... December? Or the rest of the school year...June? Lousy headlines
There will be a glut of repos starting in late June. Probably be some smoking deals then.
‘Governor Wolf must have run out of things to close, so he’s turned his attention to extending the duration of closure.’
lots of tree buds haven’t opened yet; he can order them closed...
Rest of academic year, not calendar year. I agree about the headline. Patch can be sloppy but they get the word out quickly.
‘Will I get a school tax refund?’
nope...
‘Teachers unions still getting paid 100%, right?’
yep...
Interesting idea. We like to buy new because hubby does all the maintenance and doesn't like to inherit problems. The same is not true of our sons, who have less forgiving budgets. Might be a good opportunity.
Shhhh . . . don't give him any ideas
As politicians throw tens of millions of Americans out of work - who will be kept whole? Wall Street and Government employees.
The rest of you? Sorry, youre on your own.
