The mayor of Louisville, Kentucky says churches will not be allowed to hold drive-in services on Easter Sunday.
Mayor Greg Fischer, a Democrat, said he made his decision with a heavy heart.
Our job is to deny the virus, the mayor told television station WDRB. If we dont do that, more lives will be lost. I know its tough I just cant allow (drive-thru church services) to happen.
The Courier-Journal reports that the mayor wants congregants who belong to a church that is defying Fischers request to contact their minister or the citys 311 line.
The mayor actually wants Christians to rat out their pastors, folks.
Its not really practical or safe to accommodate drive up services taking place in our community, the mayor said during a video address. Think about this on Sunday morning there would be hundreds of thousands of people driving around our community.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, also a Democrat, said he supports leaders across the state who are banning churches from holding drive-in services, the newspaper reported.
This is not the time to put large numbers of people in the same space, the mayor said. That would just create a tinder box for the virus. It creates way too many opportunities for people to contract the disease.
Steven Webb, the pastor of the Dixie Valley Church of God said he understands the mayors edict.
Scripture tells us that God tells us that we should obey the authority that he has placed over us, he told television station WLKY. And so for us it is no question that if the governor and the mayor has asked for us to do that then we should obey that.
But a good many people around the city are not happy with the mayors decision.
How come drive-in church services are being cancelled this week in Louisville to flatten the curve, but drive-thrus and drive-up ice cream stores are open as well as liquor stores and abortion clinics, one person wrote on social media.
This is our mayor, wrote another citizen, Abortion clinics open, but no to drive-in church. What is wrong with this picture?
Thats a fair question.
The EMW Womens Surgical Center, which advertises itself as the states only licensed abortion clinic, is open for business at this very moment.
Id say the risk of death in an abortion clinic is far greater than attending a drive-in Easter Sunday church service.
Many people in the same space...but in separate cars - that is certainly social distancing.
By the way, folks, this is the same mayor who came out in support of the demonstrators outside of McConnell’s house who were calling for him to be murdered.
The whole county is now in the city limits after the governments merged. It is kind of a strange thing, as there are other cities contained within the county that also have mayors and councils that are elected.
Yarmuth and Fischer - quite a pair.
You have the service with people in the parking lot in their cars.
Since many if not most have Bluetooth in their cars now, people could do the drive-in thing to listen to services being streamed on YouTube.
Our betters have allowed a drivein and stay in the car service on Sunday.
Forest Acres, outside of Columbia SC.
I am reminded of another time, not too long ago, during the middle of a horrendous war. It was the morning of D-Day and on the national radio, station WEAF, NYC, had on local ministers, priests, pastors, rabbis, etc...with prayers for this momentus day.
While I do understand congregants wanting to congregate and while I think the idea of a drive-in or drive and park church makes a unique American solution to a problem; I do not understand why local and regional leaders do not want people in their automobiles.
Okay...here is a solution. Have the local NPR tv/radio station provide time/hours to all demoninations/sects to give a service. Local public radio would be excellent in providing this very public service.
It is not a perfect solution. I have no problem with people sitting in their cars as their pastor offers prayer and Easter message. But if the powers that be will not bend, then there are still a couple of other solutions, the above mentioned radio solution and one other: All demoninations and sects offer drive and park services in a particular or state. All Churchs particpating. What will police do when thirty churches in a town have people parking and listening to their pastor? Can’t arrest everyone...
This stupidity has to stop.
They have taken over most schools , all of areas of health, our privacy and the media are no longer a free press .
Seems now they want to see how far along they have gotten with gotten in controlling the populace by frightening with various crises /scare tactics.
Global warming scare,storms/ weather and now they take advantage of our yearly out brake of viruses to see how willing we are to give up our freedom of movement and the very important freedom of assembly, by seeing to what degree we are willing to give up our freedom of worship and the the right to work.
They already have the means in place to know and control the money we already have by putting a brick on our banking, except cash but that's coming.
Now they seem to be testing see if they can stop us from at least for a good while of getting any more monies to provide the very daily necessities of life, liberty and the persuite happiness.
Maybe I'm just a conspiracy nut but it seems I have heard in the past some very powerful and bad people say something like "Never let a crises go to waste" and "I am from the government and I am here to help you".
I have been around a long time and some of these things have a very, very bad smell.
Also I have been through both parties and I have seen and had my stomach turned at what both of them have done to the good man that we elected to be our President.
I'm an old man that would like very much to call them what they are to their face and spit in their eye for what the bastards have done to him and to our country.
Read this:
McMaster addressed Easter services during the news conference where he announced the stay at home order.
“On Easter services, we recommend that those services continue, of course, but we urge the churches and others to stream on the internet, if they can, to meet outdoors, if they can and if they can’t do those, please provide for that social distancing in the church.
McMaster was asked by a reporter during the news conference about a church in Charleston that held a service and the pastor said it was his constitution right to keep the church open.
I can’t speak for other governors but this governor is not going to intrude on the First Amendment. That is an absolute right. We are encouraging pastors and others and any house of worship and any congregation of any kind to use social distancing. That is go online.”
I’m glad Henry got something right.
This excessive shutdown stuff is insane.
We can still eat, drink, play golf and go to church. Fishing...not so much.
Four out of five ain’t too bad, I guess. McMaster listens too much to his squishy RINO buddies in Myrtle Beach and Charleston.
I’d like to go to my makeshift garage about 1/2 mile away.
It’s in a commercial area. No one goes there but me. No power, water or anything to encourage visitors.
This citizen drove by on his work from home lunch break just to check the locks and doors. A drive by does it.
Anyway a gendarmes was parked in the general area. I slowly drove up and mentioned what I was doing.
This was a new fuzz.
I got the distinct impression I would get a lot of grief if I hung around at all.
Some of the gendarmes kind of know that I am the guy who hangs out there. I’ve had up to three roll up before. Just doing their job.
None of them had seen my wheels parked and the door open. A couple got a look and saw all the junk inside. Plus my stuff. Glorified junk.
Yes. Immediately.
Typical Democrat AntiChristian hypocrite. Hey, jackass, I doubt that me going to a drive in Church service is not going to kill 50% of the people, like in Planned Homicide places...
Kentucky has been run by Democrats except for 3 GOP governors in my memory since 1970, therein lies the problem. KY is not a right to work state and the Democrats tax everything but air. Property taxes, income taxes, sales tax, car taxed every year, taxes on electricity, water, cable, satellite, insurance, you name it and they tax it. Throw in a state pension that the current governor Little King Andy II, daddy robbed when he was governor and you have the Illinois of the south when it comes to a broken government.
I run the sound room and pleaded with the board of directors to get us streaming or at least doing podcast 3 yrs ago. I had to pester them to death the last 3 weeks to get them to understand and do Facebook streaming. I would love to do Bluetooth but we dont even have internet connection.
Interestingly this whole shutdown down has them asking me to get them into the 21st century. I have got them ready to buy a computer, internet access, camera for streaming and appropriate video/audio conversion equipment and software for the sound room. Thing is they are in limbo until the virus classes and we can get this equipment. We still use CD recording for the service ls.
Thank you, watching the slow motion disaster from the standpoint of being a neighbor to the south has been distressing. So much of Kentucky is drop dead gorgeous (I’ve actually seen the MoonBow at Cumberland Falls), and The Kentucky Bluegrass Country is lovely. Middlesboro is fascinating, but the government has been in self-destruct mode
It’s a complete double standard when I am allowed to stay inside my car waiting for grocery pick up in a crowded parking lot, much less go inside a grocery store, which is more dangerous than what some people are getting arrested for.
Put in mind that it’s perfectly okay for you to sit inside your car for half an hour to an hour waiting for grocery pick-up, in a parking lot.
The Governor of my Indiana just announced that drive-in church is OK as long as people stay in their cars and park in every other space.
