The mayor of Louisville, Kentucky says churches will not be allowed to hold drive-in services on Easter Sunday.
Mayor Greg Fischer, a Democrat, said he made his decision with a heavy heart.
Our job is to deny the virus, the mayor told television station WDRB. If we dont do that, more lives will be lost. I know its tough I just cant allow (drive-thru church services) to happen.
The Courier-Journal reports that the mayor wants congregants who belong to a church that is defying Fischers request to contact their minister or the citys 311 line.
The mayor actually wants Christians to rat out their pastors, folks.
Its not really practical or safe to accommodate drive up services taking place in our community, the mayor said during a video address. Think about this on Sunday morning there would be hundreds of thousands of people driving around our community.
Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear, also a Democrat, said he supports leaders across the state who are banning churches from holding drive-in services, the newspaper reported.
This is not the time to put large numbers of people in the same space, the mayor said. That would just create a tinder box for the virus. It creates way too many opportunities for people to contract the disease.
Steven Webb, the pastor of the Dixie Valley Church of God said he understands the mayors edict.
Scripture tells us that God tells us that we should obey the authority that he has placed over us, he told television station WLKY. And so for us it is no question that if the governor and the mayor has asked for us to do that then we should obey that.
But a good many people around the city are not happy with the mayors decision.
How come drive-in church services are being cancelled this week in Louisville to flatten the curve, but drive-thrus and drive-up ice cream stores are open as well as liquor stores and abortion clinics, one person wrote on social media.
This is our mayor, wrote another citizen, Abortion clinics open, but no to drive-in church. What is wrong with this picture?
Thats a fair question.
The EMW Womens Surgical Center, which advertises itself as the states only licensed abortion clinic, is open for business at this very moment.
Id say the risk of death in an abortion clinic is far greater than attending a drive-in Easter Sunday church service.
This is s wrong.
I guess people have a decision to make.
Our job is to deny diabetes.
Im sorry but I have to ban all fast food, soda, candy, cakes and breads for our own good. I do it with a very heavy heart but I do it out of love because youre too stupid to be allowed to control your own destiny.
Fixed it.
What exactly is a drive-in service?
Ignore him. Cops showing up to arrest people for staying in their cars while a guy talks to them will not fly. It also won’t look too good in the press.
Never forget.
The government
The police
Even your neighbors
willingly and happily stripped you of all your rights
...Because....”It’s for your own good.”
It means people listen to the message from parked cars as opposed to inside the chapel.
Now this I don’t agree with.
A drive in has great social distancing.
If they stay in their cars then whats the objection?
Goofy. How do 1,000 people INSIDE their cars potentially spread the Chinese virus?
When do the federal lawsuits start?
I would be violating the little tyrants parking lot church ban. I understand the group meeting health issue but in cars with people you are around 24/7 already. This isnt health safety this is a power trip by the mayor.
The sheep WILL NOT subvert government control.
If it is a drive in church, and social distancing is maintained, while social distancing is in place and active at basically every store that just so happens to sell food (even if it is just junk food), then on the grounds of free assembly and religious freedom this is unconstitutional
Drive in church should happen and let the Gov’s Police force make arrests, then off to Supreme Court we go
Why is sitting in one’s car any sort of violation?
The powers have issues with ASSEMBLY, not necessarily religion. They are trying everything to knock out those pesky amendments
Plainkly wrong and in violation of Constitutional right of freedom of religion.
Drive in services pose no risk of infection.
There are those on FR who would agree with the idea that the mayor may do anything he wishes...because “public safety”.
A lot of churches have a small radio transmitter for less than $100 that has about a half block radius. Its tied to their sound system and members can drive to the parking lot and listen to the pastors message on their car radio. Many are just doing Facebook streaming for their services but a few members are not internet savvy and dont want to be thus the parking lot broadcast.
