Major supermarket chains are beginning to report their first coronavirus-related employee deaths, leading to store closures and increasing anxiety among grocery workers as the pandemic intensifies across the country.
A Trader Joes worker in Scarsdale, N.Y., a greeter at a Giant store in Largo, Md., and two Walmart employees from the same Chicago-area store have died of covid-19, the disease the novel coronavirus causes, in recent days, the companies confirmed Monday.
Though more than 40 states have ordered nonessential businesses to close and told residents to stay home to stem the spread of the virus, supermarkets are among the retailers that remain open.
Industry experts say the rise of worker infections and deaths will likely have a ripple effect on grocers ability to retain and add new workers at a time when theyre looking to rapidly hire thousands of temporary employees.
Walmart, the nations largest grocer, is hiring 150,000 workers, while Kroger is adding more than 10,000.

Nobody’s dropping like flies.
This story is a hoax.
Don’t believe it!
And rather than riot against our politicians or the MSM, we’ll go after grocery stores, grocery workers, and each other.
Yes it is.
Wanna bet a bunch of people went into hoarding mode in the grocery and big box stores, and they *knew* they were sick at the time?
24 Shoprites in NJ have reported employees testing positive.
Turkey Hill on NJ/PA border closed for 2 weeks due to employee testing positive.
Several major grocery stores here in eastern PA have had employees testing positive - no major closures in my area yet (that I know of)
Shutting down the vape shops has almost done the same thing.
Local Safeways now have traffic cones outside and the 6-foot spacing markers on the ground, and are letting people in by groups.
More shoppers are wearing masks. A few store employees are.
The bigger nearby Safeway has a “Do you have COVID-19 symptoms? Then don’t come in the store” laminated signs taped to the traffic cones outside their store. Shopping there is sort of like going in to donate blood but without the needle stick and cookies and juice afterwards.
Not gonna read it. Just came on to say “why are we posting this crap”?
Are you kidding? A huge number of grocery workers are people over the age of 50. And, many of them have underlying health conditions. That's why they have to work these low-paying jobs. They should have started wearing masks a month ago. Of course, we had the government saying: "Oh, you don't need a mask.."
To scare grocery workers away from their job hoping to crash the grocery industry.
You bet it is. It started with Deborah telling people to avoid the grocery stores. They sense that they are beginning to lose the death grip on the economy, even most NYers are questioning the cure being worse than the disease. This is a real escalation of the hysteria machine. They are terrified Trump is going to loosen it up a bit because they know the economy will come back unless they can keep the country shut down into June.
Amazon has sick employees too. Have any died? don’t know.
Pretty clear to me that at this point they just want to shut it down to force an all by mail election.
Anyone getting what this is all about yet?
Indeed - and dying from strokes, diabetes, liver failure, alcohol poisoning, collapsed lungs, severe gastric upsets, - all sorts of conditions which strike people down daily. As the workforce for grocery stores in the US would be millions of people, one would expect that there are deaths. The way that this story is reported, vague and alarmist, makes me suspicious.
Agitprop.
How many store worker have been killed/maimed by criminals so far this year? 100? 200? More? Its Only April.
A checkout clerk was assaulted by a shop lifter this week in my affluent suburb. I heard her screaming when I was in the back of the store.
Up until about a week or so ago, corporate suits were forbidding grocery employees in my area from wearing masks & gloves - didn’t want to scare customers.
its easily predictable.
negative spin
all towards Trump
its all just going to be politicized/weaponized
You dont go to the store, Dilbert?
“At least four people who had worked at Walmart, Trader Joes and Giant have died from covid-19 in recent days”
The Washington Post ran this story on four deaths in a country of 350+ million. Evil.
