Boris Johnsons move to the intensive care unit (ICU) of St Thomas hospital signals that he has severe Covid-19. Oxygen was available through a mask on the ward he was admitted to on Sunday, but the move to intensive care on Monday strongly suggests that was not enough to help him with the breathing problems caused by the viral pneumonia that the virus triggers.
Most people in intensive care, according to the World Health Organization, require ventilation. Around 15% of people with Covid-19 become seriously ill and need oxygen therapy in hospital. A further 5% are moved into intensive care, so that their breathing can be taken over by mechanical ventilation. Some will also need support for other organs.
Anyone who is put on a ventilator will need to be sedated, although they are not unconscious. A tube must be inserted into the patients windpipe, so that air and oxygen from the machine can be blown into the lungs. That takes the strain off the lungs while they recover.
Johnson, 55, is said to have been admitted to intensive care in case he should need ventilation, but 63% of those admitted to ICUs in England, Wales and Northern Ireland are ventilated within the first 24 hours. Guidelines from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) say that critical care treatment for Covid-19 should be started with a clear plan of how the treatment will address the diagnosis and lead to agreed treatment goals (outcomes).
Ventilation is vital in most severe Covid-19 cases, which is why there has been a huge effort to obtain more machines and even encourage engineering businesses to switch production lines to make them.
In the severest cases, patients are put on an ECMO machine (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation), which can support the heart and lungs...

They can certainly save him if they use the malaria drug; and possibly not if (for bureaucratic reasons) they won’t.
I am really worried about him.

It’s FAR from certain. Works best the earlier its given.
The guy’s not the healthiest.
My odds just moved again to 30/70.
Any takers let me know
And here I thought he went to the ICU because they have a better fresh seafood menu than the general ward.
Even in the rare occasion when the Guardian gets something right they still manage to beclown themselves.
An earlier report said he was not in need of ventilation at this point. I’m not sure the speculation in this article is helpful. He may need ventilation but this author does not know that.
Sorry, I don’t take bets on human survival. Just funny that way.
They can certainly save him if they use the malaria drug...
Certainly?
Could be that he is who he is....and they moved him to a higher level of monitoring.
I did it with Kennedy jr’s plane crash when I worked at an investment bank.
And a few other times.
Made a fortune off of investment bankers.
I would assume that, being the prime minister, he would be put in ICU because it provides a better round-the-clock monitoring and treatment, even if he technically could have stayed out of ICU.
SO long as they have a free ICU bed.
“likely” ...
in other words, the Communist Manchester Guardian is simply wildly SPECULATING and making shite up ...
Prayers up for Boris. May the Great Physician heal and protect Boris, in Jesus name. Amen.
Let's hope so. He was tweetering optimistically this morning.
He didn’t stop working and start resting as soon as he was diagnosed. That was probably not a smart move at his age.
Good luck with that.....NHS and all
“They can certainly save him...”
You arrogant ass. You have no clue.
I am not downplaying this report ... but it could be that because he is the Prime Minister they have him in ICU to provide whatever he needs should he suddenly get worse.
The Brits are very reluctant to use the HCQ + Zinc protocol because 1) Trump has high hopes for its efficacy, and 2) a Jewish doctor has had great success with it.
The Yanks cannot be right about anything and the Brits are in line for antisemitism right behind Germany and France.
