AUSTIN, Texas (AP) Every day, grocery workers are restocking toilet paper, eggs, produce and canned goods as fast as the items fly off the shelves.
They disinfect keypads, freezer handles and checkout counters as hundreds of people weave around them, sometimes standing too close for comfort amid the coronavirus pandemic. Some work for hours behind clear plastic barriers installed at checkout counters, bulwarks against sudden sneezes or coughs that can propel germs.
They arent doctors or nurses, yet they have been praised for their dedication by Pope Francis, former U.S. President Barack Obama and countless people on social media, as infections and death counts rise.
From South Africa to Italy to the U.S., grocery workers many in low-wage jobs are manning the frontlines amid worldwide lockdowns, their work deemed essential to keep food and critical goods flowing. Some fear falling sick or bringing the virus home to vulnerable loved ones, and frustration is mounting as some demand better workplace protections, including shorter hours to allow them to rest, and hazard pay for working closely with the public.

If they are afraid they can quit and be replaced by the unemployed who are not afraid.
I have thanked them all every time I walk into a store. This hysteria would have been far worse if they did not come to work and I for one am very thankful for everyone who has continued to work so we would not add food shortage fear to our list of problems.
Kudos and prayers for all of them and a heartfelt thank-you.

The ones I have talked to think America has lost its mind.
Here in L.A. every cashier at the Korean market has been wearing masks since weeks ago! American markets hopefully catching up. So appreciate the efforts of all the supermarket workers — not just in stocking shelves, but in providing kind and humorous human contact in this period of isolation. The interaction can be such a relief! Heroes. All.
May God bless each and every one of them and keep them and their families safe in Jesus’ name.
I spoke with a guy who was stocking shelves at the local chain grocery store. Unlimited overtime, no questions asked.

Trying to scare everyone.
I do the same, Im grateful they are there and I plan on doing something for them as soon as this is over.
Pretty much. It appears we may be getting close to peaking in the country, and availability of food supplies is becoming more reliable (in general - there are exceptions). The left and the MSM can't have that kind of success.
Trader Joes friendly cashiers haven’t missed a beat and they are so appreciative of our thanks and support. We’re now allowed only 25 customers at a time and X’s everywhere.
“cashier at the Korean market”
I think they’ve been wearing masks for three DECADES, not three WEEKS.
I’m amazed at sheer number of morons in this country.
A co-irker told me that yesterday he saw some woman crossing a street with a clear plastic bag on her head.
I guess air could get in.
In my area they do not act afraid.
I am tired of the media BS.
Quick - everyone to your safes paces!
Shelter in place in fetal position and suck your thumb (but first wash your hands)
Someone from the government will be around in about 180 days to check on you.
Good for them, for sure!
I talked with a guy restocking at Target about where to find sanitizer. He was REAL helpful and kind. Didn’t miss a beat doing his work while talking to me, either.
Let’s not forget truckers. Without truckers, we’d be eating dandelions and wiping our butts with leaves.
Speaking of wiping our rearends, Trump needs to order all print publications to turn these giant rolls of newsprint into TP. Newspapers are NOT essential.
Good post!
