All this when experts agree that rinsing yourself with water is infinitely more sanitary and environmentally sound. Dr. H. Randolph Bailey, a colorectal surgeon at the University of Texas McGovern Medical School in Houston, recommended bidets or toilet attachments, such as the Washlet or Tushy.

“A lot of people who come to see me have fairly significant irritation of their bottoms,” he said. “Most of the time it has to do with overzealous cleaning” — wiping too vigorously with toilet paper or using wipes, which often contain harsh fragrances and chemicals.

Is It Time for Americans to Embrace the Bidet? Moreover, he said, you’re just never going to get as clean as rinsing with water. Cleanliness matters, since you can get seriously ill from diseases transmitted via feces. Cholera, hepatitis, and E. coli and urinary tract infections are prime examples. Recent studies have found coronavirus in feces, as well.

Just as an aside... did Dr Bailey dream of being a colorectal surgeon when he was a child?! I mean, God bless him but...

10 years after we adopt bidets the NYT will tell us bidets are consuming too much water and we need to give them up and use leaves from trees.

Indeed they will.

Wouldn’t that cause a Water Shortage?

The Envirowacks pushed Low Flow Toilets. Now they want a mini Firehose attached to them?

If we rural folk were smart we’d start selling eco friendly TP and package up those 3 leaved plants and sell them to the city folk. Then buy up all the Calamine lotion and triple the price to sell online.

...."They neglected to say such a thing would cost $500-$600."...

I thought the same thing, but the price of TP has skyrocketed even before the virus. A family of 4 could pay for a "Cadillac" Bidet in a few months. Some are much cheaper, but I probably would go for the one with heated water and costs more. Personally, I had to change to Charmin because of bowel troubles and irritation. Some of the cheaper TP feels like newspaper to me.

I've given serious thought to a Bidet, but getting a plug close enough to the bowel has stumped me. My wife wouldn't put up with an extension cord across the floor.
