Highlights

• Ivermectin is an inhibitor of the COVID-19 causative virus (SARS-CoV-2) in vitro. • A single treatment able to effect ∼5000-fold reduction in virus at 48h in cell culture. • Ivermectin is FDA-approved for parasitic infections, and therefore has a potential for repurposing. • Ivermectin is widely available, due to its inclusion on the WHO model list of essential medicines.

Abstract

Although several clinical trials are now underway to test possible therapies, the worldwide response to the COVID-19 outbreak has been largely limited to monitoring/containment. We report here that Ivermectin, an FDA-approved anti-parasitic previously shown to have broad-spectrum anti-viral activity in vitro, is an inhibitor of the causative virus (SARS-CoV-2), with a single addition to Vero-hSLAM cells 2 hours post infection with SARS-CoV-2 able to effect ∼5000-fold reduction in viral RNA at 48 h. Ivermectin therefore warrants further investigation for possible benefits in humans.

Ivermectin is an FDA-approved broad spectrum anti-parasitic agent1 that in recent years we, along with other groups, have shown to have anti-viral activity against a broad range of viruses2, 3, 4, 5 in vitro. Originally identified as an inhibitor of interaction between the human immunodeficiency virus-1 (HIV-1) integrase protein (IN) and the importin (IMP) α/β1 heterodimer responsible for IN nuclear import6, Ivermectin has since been confirmed to inhibit IN nuclear import and HIV-1 replication5. Other actions of ivermectin have been reported7, but ivermectin has been shown to inhibit nuclear import of host (eg.8,9) and viral proteins, including simian virus SV40 large tumour antigen (T-ag) and dengue virus (DENV) non-structural protein 55, 6. Importantly, it has been demonstrated to limit infection by RNA viruses such as DENV 1-44, West Nile Virus10, Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV)3 and influenza2, with this broad spectrum activity believed to be due to the reliance by many different RNA viruses...

This is the same drug you give your dog for heartworm prevention.

Farmers buy it in bulk to treat their livestock.

It's been around for years. I know farmers who take it when they feel a cold coming on, and they say it works.

Safe for humans says Mr. Internet, but not recommending anything of course.

Wonder how quickly they'll get these tests out of the petri dish and into the humans.

i wonder how many young and strong may not have survived without ventilators or steroids are some form of modern treatment.

I am thankful we have them.

Maybe not a whole lot more would have died but there may have been more damage from the virus. To the lungs, perhaps

Did you not feel safe ordering the pills with all the Chinese characters on the bottle?

Those horse syringes are graduated depending on the weight of the horse. One syringe is good for a 1200# horse.

It has graduated markings for each 250 pounds.

Half would be for 125 pounds.

You do realize just about all your drugs are coming from China even if they don’t have Chinese characters on the package?

By the time they conclude trial research, the next pandemic will come along.

You guys can consume your dog’s heartworm medications, I’ll try the plaquenil.

It seems like just about anything will kill this virus. Have they tried Vitamin D or Ascorbate?

It’s also the active ingredient in my prescription rosacea cream. Nothing else had ever cleared it up so well.

Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with severe COVID-19.

I don’t think Vitamin D is a cure, but a deficiency sure seems to make things worse.

I have plenty of it, probably ingested enough from horses aspirating some and blowing it back in my face to kill all the coronavirus I might have been exposed to.

It also takes almost none of it, horse paste is usually 1.87% Ivermectin while the heartworm med for dogs is .05% Ivermectin. There are also dogs that can’t take it, usually border collie type breeds are intolerant of it.
