British Prime Minister Boris Johnson was admitted to a hospital after suffering from coronavirus symptoms 10 days after testing positive, his office announced Sunday.
Downing Street said Sunday the hospitalization was a "precautionary step" and he remained in charge of the government.
A spokesperson said: On the advice of his doctor, the prime minister has tonight been admitted to hospital for tests. This is a precautionary step, as the prime minister continues to have persistent symptoms of coronavirus 10 days after testing positive for the virus. The prime minister thanks [National Health Service] staff for all of their incredible hard work and urges the public to continue to follow the governments advice to stay at home, protect the NHS and save lives.
Johnson had been showing persistent symptoms including a high temperature, Sky News reported.
Johnson announced last Friday he was extending his time in self-isolation as he continued to show symptoms of the coronavirus -- a week after he tested positive for the highly contagious virus.
"Although I'm feeling better and I've done my seven days of isolation, alas I still have one of the symptoms, a minor symptom, he said on a video message posted to Twitter.
Johnson, 55, had been quarantined in his home since being diagnosed with COVID-19 on March 26.
In a video message posted to his Twitter account March 27, he explained he had developed "mild symptoms" over the last 24 hours -- "a temperature and a persistent cough."

That’s it! I’m calling on Governors around the U.S. to extend these home isolations indefinitely! We simply cannot take a chance! (I don’t need a sarc tag do I?)
They’ll be checking his lungs.
Is BoJo taking the drug combo, anyone know?
Re: Theyll be checking his lungs.
BoJo used to be a smoker. Don;t know if he quit. I think and hope he did.
If he goes goes up, the UK is screwed.
Get well Boris - not the most healthiest of chaps (smoker, portly)...
If they’re going to use HCQ + AZITHROMYCIN, the best time to do it is ASAP.
Don’t wait till the disease progresses to a point where you have to be intubated, your chances of survival drops at that point.
I don’t know. I bet POTUS will call him with get well wishes and recommend the HCQ/Zpack if PM Boris isn’t receiving it though.
Oh man...We’e praying for you Boris. You’re much loved.
In a previous thread, Boris was scolded for going outside to clap for first responders- without his coat. Maybe he caught a cold.
Get well quick Mr. Johnson. Your country needs you!
Whatever the Brits do, don’t let them treat Boris with hydroychloroquine and zinc. This is a bad idea from the Yanks and the Orange Man. Who cares if it works and might save his life?
We’re NOT praying for Fredo.
Multiple sources reporting he is now on a ventilator
His pregnant gf is isolated with symptoms
How is that muslim mayor of London doing (Sadiq Khan)? Haven’t heard his name around here in a long while. When does he start campaigning for re-election?
That’s not good.
Too bad he renounced his U.S. citizenship. He could have come back to his birthplace for treatment.
Prayers for the PM, his fiancée, and their unborn child.
Any sources for him being on a ventilator? They aren’t reporting this on the BBC.
