Ilya from Michigan writes . . .
If youd have met me three weeks ago, youd unequivocally know my stance on guns. I was not only against the ownership of AR-15s, I was in the minority of folks who thought all private gun ownership should be illegal.
Fast forward to today: I own a GLOCK 19 Gen5.
Im still in a bit of disbelief that there is a dangerous weapon in my house: one that more frequently contributes to accidental deaths, violent homicides, and suicides, rather than the romanticized personal protection experiences.
What happened? The world changed overnight and my opinion evolved.
Ive always been a strongly opinionated person, but I pride myself on the idea that my beliefs are loosely held. Strong opinions are great, but what you dont want is to be egotistically blinded by them. I dont want to be held hostage by a belief that is no longer valid, given new information. My views before
I live a pretty privileged existence. My family lives in one of the most affluent communities in Michigan. Everyone in the neighborhood leaves their doors open with bikes on the front lawn. Rarely do we worry about anything being stolen, let alone violent crime. I wasnt born with this privilege, but worked really hard to get where I am.
Circumstances shape peoples understanding of the world, and my situation highly influenced my views on gun ownership. There was no argument, be it constitutional, personal protection, safety, hunting, or anything else that would change my mind and stop me from logically deconstructing your argument.

Most so-called “anti-gun” people aren’t anti-gun at all.
They just think the wrong people have the guns. (Bible-Clinging White People!)
Yep, them things are known to do all that just sitting there, untouched.........
As usual, some gun shop owner sold a glock, which this guy will end up shooting himself accidentally with.
Ive been openly carrying mine a lot lately. Theres no telling when an outage at a retailer will result in a violent riot of feral Democrats.
There are no atheists in foxholes.
Even if this person returns to a former mindset, this experience will inform them and alter their opinion to an extent.
Glock 19 is a fine handgun. Bought one for myself and my son.
Not much for concealability but everything else it’s grade A.
The writer is simply a garden variety narcissist; I’m not impressed with her little epiphany.
“Most so-called anti-gun people arent anti-gun at all.
They just think the wrong people have the guns.”
Nailed it. Utterly nailed it.
I expect LOTS of NDs.
States have been shutting down outdoor gun ranges.
It me in mind of a passage from Charleston Heston’s book. The same people who attacked his stance on the 2nd Amendment were the ones who came up to him and asked to borrow one of his firearms during the riots. He calmly told them it was illegal and they were not properly trained in firearm safety.
You must keep in mind that open carry also makes you the first target. Just be safe and aware of your surroundings.
Oh, that goes without saying. My piece is still in a very inconspicuous location. I just like open carry for the quick accessibility.
That’s a scary story. An allegedly former gun hater with no experience, no training goes out and buys a handgun. He/she has no idea about safety. He/she won’t know how to hold it or what to do if it jams. It’s the world gone mad.
Like you said - liberals do NOT hate guns. In fact, liberals love guns. They just dont want YOU to have one.
So NOW you get it? Do yourself a favor as a new gun owner and research on how to handle it. Some main facts about guns:
They are always loaded.
Never ever put your finger on the trigger until the need to fire.
Never ever point the weapon at anyone. That includes if you've dislodged the magazine and checked to see if a round is not chambered.
Never give your gun to someone who isn't familiar with it.
Practice, practice, practice at a gun range if you can find one open.
Don’t shoot yourself.
