Mexico, World's Top Beer Exporter, Halts Brewery Operations
Wall Street Journal ^ | April 3, 2020 | Santiago PĂ©rez

Mexican brewers are halting production and domestic distribution in response to a federal suspension of nonessential economic activity to contain the spread of the new coronavirus.

Heineken Mexico, which brews brands such as Dos Equis, Sol and Indio, said Friday it would suspend nationwide distribution of its products. Output at its seven breweries will be reduced to a minimum to prevent “irreversible effects that could make it impossible to reactivate our economic activity,” the company said in a statement.

Its main rival, Grupo Modelo, brewer of Corona and Modelo, took similar measures on Thursday. The company is a unit of AB-InBev.

Constellation Brands, which brews and sells Corona, Pacífico and Modelo brands exclusively for U.S. consumers, also reduced operations to minimum levels, a company official said Friday. Constellation runs one of the world's largest breweries in northern Mexico, just across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas.

Mexico is the world's top beer exporter, generating some $4 billion in annual sales. It is also the main source of imported beer in the U.S., with a market share of over 70%, according to the Beer Institute, the Washington, D.C.-based organization that represents the U.S. beer industry.

Not a fan of Mexican beer anyways. I home brew and can still purchase plenty of ingredients online.

Wasn’t there a news story (a long time ago) of Mexican peeing into the vats for their exported beer.

I haven’t drank any Corona since then.
