Trump Organization has laid off about 1,500 employees as pandemic hits business

The Trump Organization has laid off or furloughed about 1,500 employees at hotels in the United States and Canada as the coronavirus pandemic inflicts further pain on the president’s private business.

With most of President Trump’s hotels and clubs closed amid stay-at-home orders around the world, the Trump Organization has responded by slashing costs, much like other companies in the hospitality and tourism industries. The Trump Organization has laid off or furloughed employees at hotels in New York, the District of Columbia, Miami, Chicago, Las Vegas, Vancouver and Honolulu, according to public filings and people familiar with the properties, including union officials.

Should have seen this coming.

When you specifically exclude the Trump Organization from federal programs meant to prevent layoffs then what else can they possibly expect? Companies have little choice.

Having been on the employer side of this I can tell you that alternatives to layoff are unlawful. For example, you can’t furlough someone. You can’t temporarily reduce their pay. Your only options are to put them on vacation or whatever leave is legally allowed. When they run out of that, the only thing you can do that allows them to continue receiving income (unemployment) is to lay them off.

In all the cases I dealt with, the best option for the employee was to be laid off.

If the company can afford it they can keep employees on the payroll and assign them jobs like cleaning, maintenance and similar tasks. Most will not accept the change, however temporary. “I’m a software engineer, not a fry cook.” Companies that are publicly owned by shareholders would quickly have a change in management if they tried this.

At one of the companies I worked at I suggested a number of alternatives and the lawyers said, “no, no, and no.”

LOL! You expected otherwise? The media will probably lead with this story for the next day or two, followed by interviews with illegals who claim they got laid off by the Trump Organization. Anything to demonize the President.

There is only so much you can pay without revenue. I didn’t click on the link, but is it all Trump or is there something about the hotel industry.

My organization is paying probably 15% of the workforce to stay home and do nothing or answer forwarded phones that aren’t ringing.. As we look at the financial ,picture for the next few months, this is not sustainable. Several positions (event staff) are dependent on revenue we aren’t getting.

However, layoffs will be costly. We will need to pay out vacation at minimum. . At some point we will need those positions filled. Posting, reviewing, interviewing, hiring, etc is also a cost.

We are looking at options such as reducing hours for the phone monitors and furloughs. No matter what, it’s a no-win situation.

Democratic playbook: Exclude Trump businesses from the stimulus, then complain about the consequences.

Yes, it’s more complicated than that, but you know that people laid off at Trump businesses now are going to turn up in Democrat ads before this is over. Replay of the ads against Romney in 2012.
