For now, social distancing is the best America can do to contain the Covid-19 pandemic. But if the U.S. truly mobilizes, it can soon deploy better weaponsadvanced teststhat will allow the country to shift gradually to a protocol less disruptive and more effective than a lockdown.
Instead of ricocheting between an unsustainable shutdown and a dangerous, uncertain return to normalcy, the U.S. could mount a sustainable strategy with better tests and maintain a stable course for as long as it takes to develop a vaccine or cure. The country will once more be able to plan for the future, get back to work safely and avoid an economic depression. This will require massive investment to ramp up production and coordinate the construction of test centers. But the alternatives are even more costly.

100,000 tests a day presently.
Coming on line:
Abbott Laboratories’ toaster-size, 13 minute testing machines capable of performing 50,000 tests per day through its platform that will be used at doctors’ offices and urgent care clinics.
Cepheid’s 5000, 45 minute test machines.
We could use a test rate of 100,000 per 100,000 for the first month.
It’s not entirely true that states with stricter controls show lower infection rates. I saw a list of the 12 states, all red ones, with the least restrictive controls, and they all have low infection rates.
That has to be done through contact tracing. South Korea hasn’t gone overboard with testing, but they have tested the right people via contact tracing. Massachusetts has said they’re going to do a big contact tracing effort now. Some local areas of states have done it with some good results in slowing outbreaks too.
It does seem like contact tracing and testing becomes irrelevant when an outbreak becomes as large as New York City’s. NYC needs a geographic quarantine just like an infected ship. No one in or out.
You last sentence. You just hit on it, perhaps unwittingly. Right now it appears the loss of the economy is a tragedy, and it is. As much as we may hate it for the next month at least we absolutely need government. We cannot lose that. Not in the midst of an epidemic.
I agree. But what I am hearing Cuomo and Fauci and Murphy saying isnt a month, its Fall is maybe beyond.
I dont think anybody knows what is going to happen. I had a pretty good idea two weeks ago we would be here now and nobody wanted to hear it. When I heard Trump say we could be lucky to get away with 100,000 or 200,000 deaths I cringed inside. After seeing the # new deaths yesterday that # could be optimistic. Look at the shape of the # new deaths curve. Its still headed north and right now the NYC area is about all that is really getting hammered.
I guess its time to start todays Q&A.
I agree. Two points:
Nobody knows. But the models keep crashing.
Second, anytime there is a model or projection about the virus, it is treated as a sacrosanct pronouncement of a need for Lockdown. Mention a model of the collateral damage? Not so much. Its treated as alarmism.
I really haven’t followed Cuomo that close, care to enlighten me on his lock down until Fall plan. I live in CT and last I heard our governor hasn’t discussed anything past April or early May.
I saw the Pennsylvania governor say a week or two ago we might need a lockdown until there’s a vaccine.
It was reported on Fox that Cuomo is meeting with his advisers to discuss the plan for locking down until Fall.
NY is the ONLY state that has a dire problem not even Washington State which started this hysteria has high numbers NY might need to be locked down longer but I would say in 30 days the virus will have run its course in NY and most of the state will have herd immunity!!
Vaccines will not be available for 18 months are we supposed to lock the country down for 18 months not NO BUT HELL NO!!!
Hit piece on Trump. The real failure here was from the permanent bureaucracy. Trump cant wade in with multiple Youre fired! actions due to civil service protections.
It might be only like a bad flu year, if we’re lucky, thanks to social distancing.
1300+ dead yesterday, worst day yet. How do you know where it will peak?
Its not enough. Here in NJ you have to have severe symptoms to get tested, then wait 7 to 14 days for results. Test results are coming back after the patients die. What friggin use is that?
I don’t know whose fault that is, but it sucks.
They must be heavily invested in diagnostics. After 3 decades of testing for seasonal flu.. a test doesnt save you or anyone else. You were contagious before getting tested. Its a nice paid vacay while everyone else works.
Too many false negatives with a piss poor collection. And one group of docs think more false negs as it transitions from replicating in the upper resp to the lower.
This is Reckless Endangerment of Frontline Healthcare workers.
Is you are not sob, they aren’t testing you anyway.
Stay home if you are sick, idiot.. and stop endangering others. I guess common sense flu control doesn’r profit whomever wrote this article.
Andxi bet their family isn’t being endangered by a bunch of people coughing on them.
