A grand-niece of President John F. Kennedy and her son drowned after rowing into the rough Chesapeake Bay in Maryland to recover a soccer ball, authorities and witnesses said Friday.
Maeve Kennedy Townsend McKean, the granddaughter of Robert F. Kennedy, and her 8-year-old son, Gideon Joseph Kennedy McKean, got into the canoe around 4 p.m. Thursday outside her mothers home in Shady Side, according to the Washington Post.
The child had been kicking a ball with other kids when it fell into the water, and the pair went to retrieve it amid high winds, her husband, David McKean, told the paper.
[They] popped into a canoe to chase it down. They just got farther out than they could handle, and couldnt get back in, David McKean said.
The pair was later sucked into the South River where they drowned, Gov. Larry Hogan said at a press conference Friday.
McKean, 40, is the daughter of former Maryland Lt. Gov. Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, who she was visiting when the tragedy struck.

Trying to retrieve a soccer ball?
Sounds like bullshit
Evidently the only Kennedy’s that could swim were Teddy and JFK.
Paddling out on these cold waters isn’t wise, and if it was as windy in Maryland as it was in SE Pennsylvania yesterday, it was even more unwise. I’m sorry for the family’s loss, but I wouldn’t attribute it to a curse - just a very bad decision.
You took your 8 year old son with you in a canoe on the bay in rough water? For a soccer ball?
Must have been drinking to make such a poor decision and take your son with you.
A stupid woman despite all her degrees. Maybe was drinking. The boy looks like RFK.
My thoughts exactly. I’ve heard people talk of Kennedy tragedies, and they include Chappaquiddick, JFK Jr. Plane crash, the William Kennedy Smith rape case, among others. Yes too many of their family issues are zelf inflicted.
That is so painful to hear. I am so sorry.
Thanks guys. Really appreciate it.
Sorry for your loss brother. May he R.I.P.
Very sad to hear this. Prayers for the family and the souls of the deceased. But I have to agree with some of the other comments. We are living in a time of extraordinary challenge. Thousands are dying daily all over the world. What is the claim to fame of these two individuals justifying all of this attention?
So tragic. So very sorry.
“And ESPECIALLY dont get into an Oldsmobile driven by a Kennedy...”
for one thing, that Olds will be at least 15 years old.
More Kennedy failures while operating transportation equipment.
It's been very windy the last several days. And chilly.
The Kennedy curse continues on... Accidents and assassinations, and when it comes to them killing others through their misfortunes that’s also a pretty long list.
I’ll never forget Teddy’s refrain.. “How’s the water down there Mary Jo?”
I guess it depends on what is meant by “visiting.” My son and his pregnant wife have moved in with his in-laws for the duration, in northern Maryland. The family has a large house on a small farmette, so they have a little room to legally roam. Otherwise, he only leaves if the family needs something at the store, or occasionally for work. He works in critical infrastructure, so even though about 90% of his work is telework right now, he occasionally is on-site.
The larger question is what the kennedys were doing on the water, as that appears to be prohibited under the governor’s current order. Kayaking and paddle boating are permitted for exercise, as long as all participants keep 6 feet social distancing, but otherwise, recreational boating is currently prohibited. Two people in a canoe don’t seem to quite fit into the guidelines.
They died breaking the law.
Amen. Very sad.
Pity.
Is there some sort of hex on the Kennedy family?
Not the first Kennedy to do that.
Not for this cowboy but then I can swim. But I do have them in the boat if I should need them.
