Economists fear slow pace of testing will prolong recession

Epidemiologists are warning that unless the federal government overhauls its pandemic response to ensure a national system for testing, the U.S. could find itself in a vicious cycle of sporadic lockdowns until scientists find a treatment or vaccine for the coronavirus.

A scenario like that would lessen the chances of a quick, V-shaped economic rebound that analysts are hoping for and instead prolong the recession and subsequent recovery, damaging household finances for years to come.

“The economic damage associated with the outbreak is nonlinear,” S&P Global said in a report this week. “That means, for example, that if containment takes twice as long as expected, the economic damage will be more than twice as bad, and, therefore, recovery could take longer and be weaker (with more lost output) than projected.”

More than 75 percent of Americans are under some sort of stay-at-home order in an attempt to mitigate the spread of the virus and to alleviate pressure on hospitals strained by coronavirus patients.

President Trump warned that the country is heading into a “painful” two-week period that will constitute the peak of the virus, and government models are forecasting June 1 as the date for lifting restrictions on the economy. But the light at the end of the tunnel is likely to be further off than either of those events.

Without a new public health strategy in place, experts argue, reopening the economy would likely lead to new outbreaks.

This whole “testing as crucial” mantra is part of the left’s narrative. Sometimes people get the virus after they’re tested. They’re not even closing things down in Sweden, and not testing everyone in most places.

“national testing” = nationalization of labs (no more LabCorp, Quest, etc)

the Left wants to test the whole country, which is impossible and they know it... anything less and they can continue to blame Trump.

No, it’s what they’ve done in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan to keep their economies open. They test everybody, and isolate only the people who test positive (and their close contacts). Everybody else goes about their life and work, and the economy keeps going - unlike our totalitarian lockdown.

Give the sick folks the necessary meds...so they get better sooner. They’ve picked up some immunity.

The focus in the US seems to be more on manufacturing ventilators rather than test kits.

Mass testing is what they’ve done in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taiwan to keep their economies open.

They test everybody, and isolate only the people who test positive (and their close contacts).

Everybody else goes about their life and work, and the economy keeps going - unlike our totalitarian lockdown.

I was tested yesterday. The process was amazingly professional. Don’t believe all this crap about it being terribly painful. It’s not a big deal.

Made me appreciate our wonderful doctors and nurses all the more. And if you go to a convenience store and see a trucker trying to buy coffee, pay for it.

No. You can’t get a test if you don’t have symptoms - and in many places your symptoms have to be bad enough that you’re admitted to the hospital.

in contrast, Singapore tests everybody, regardless of whether they have symptoms. The people who test negative are free to go about their business, and the economy keeps going.

Those are basically city-states where it may be practical. Lots of places haven't been testing everyone and also not it nearly as bad as Italy.

By that extension, should the places with the least testing have the highest mortality rates in the world when this is all done?

Epidemiologists huh?
F8CK all Epidemiologists!
They are the ones that got us into this economic mess in the first place.

Empty waiting rooms, testing centers, and hospitals.

Maybe this is just a scam by the left to kill the economy to hurt the President. I wouldn’t past the lying thieving left to do something like that.

What you’re leaving out is the vast difference in population. It’s much easier for them to test “everybody.” How do you make every American take a test anyway, even if it were possible?

Except that Singapore and Hong Kong are city states. I repeat, they are both medium sized cities states with a very small land area.
You are going to compare that to the vast land area USA with a population of 330 million?

Screw testing, we need cures. Lets hear more about the various finding of the Country’s labs then concentrate on tests. One still can die with tests but may live with cures.

HEAR THIS: I and millions like me will NOT give our DNA sample to the government to be tested for COVID-19. Even Obama didn’t ask for this during Swine Flu H1N1.

Fine, then stay locked up the way you are now. I guess that’s your idea of freedom?
