Notice the north-south difference. Lombardy is the most populated province but Lazio (Rome) and Campania (Naples) are the 2nd and 3rd most populated provinces yet their death rates are hugely less than in Lombardy.

Any thoughts?

I think most people that have the virus either were world travelers or came in contact with someone who did.

Not at all sure why anyone would believe the numbers coming from China, yet most articles that are posted compare China to other countries. Also, the mortality rate in Italy is off the charts.

Lombardy was where the index cases and exposures were in Italy. The fashion industry in Milan has lots of connections to China, and probably the early exposure there was widespread.

Less pollution in the south. Also, fewer tests there.

Eat more Tomatoes Northern Italy!

"While northern Italians love their rich cream sauces, polenta and stuffed meats, people in the south embrace flavors such as tangy tomato sauces, olive oil and fresh steamed seafood. Both north and south have contributed their share to classic Italian cuisine, but each region has its own distinct set of flavors"

On a more serious note maybe it can be explained in that Northern Italy has a textile Industry with many Chinese workers and now business Owners. They came back from China after the Holidays many of them already infected and wrecked havoc on the local population.

Northern Italy has many business activities with China and many Chinese live in Northern Italy as well. There was a lot of travel between both countries even after the virus was reported. Originally reported on a Fox News segment.

Rome which is in the province of Lazio gets quite a few international travelers yet the province of Lazio has 162 deaths versus 7,199 in Lombardy.

“Less pollution in the south. Also, fewer tests there.”

I’m sure they are sophisticated enough in S Italy to have figured out how to test for a death

It is an area where a lot of Chinese work, and where the left wing government promoted Italians to hug a Chinese person to show they are not racist.
I kid you not
Just watch this and you will see Pelosi, NY Mayor, Gov , Italians leadership etc .

Sort of, but the leadership in Lombardy promoted hugging the Chinese. There are a lot of Chinese in the area, and the left wing government back then promoted it by saying they were not racist.

The number of Chinese-owned businesses has grown by 232 percent across the country since 2003, with the largest influx into Milan, Naples, and Prato. Many immigrants are from Wuhan. Many traveled from Italy to celebrate the Chinese New Year and traveled back to Italy as carriers of COVID-19.

A lot of the Italians did more than hug a Chinese. There is a big sex trade from China to Italy. Chinese prostitutes are popular in Italy.

If that is what is is, shouldn't American cities on the west coast be the major hot spots rather than what we are experiencing in the northeast?

True, and there is a lot of Chinese in that area due to the fashion industry, and the need for cheap labor.

Al of these deaths due to idiotic elected officials and left wing fools trying to show they are not racist.
Yet again we see the destruction of their agenda.

I should have included world travelers with a China connection. I’m hoping this weird fascination with China that all kinds of people have including a fair amount of “conservatives” comes to a screeching halt. We’re never going back to business as “usual” with the Chicoms. If the powers that be try to sweep this crap under the rug after this initial virus is over then we need to bitch from the mountain tops or worse. Fool me once shame on you. Fool me twice shame on us.
