The unprecedented global pandemic that knows no borders should be a clear lesson for all of us of how interconnected and interdependent we all are, as a human community, and how small our already frail planet has become in the era of globalization. Diversity & Inclusion would like to salute all of you—administrators, faculty, staff, and of course, our students—for your resilience and strength, whether at the frontlines, physically or virtually, in services and in the classroom. We also want to remind ourselves that as in all human experiences, the pandemic has not impacted all communities equally. Many communities are not only more exposed but more vulnerable than others, whether on income levels, nationality, emigration status and other.

• We know that on a national basis, Asian American and Asian immigrant groups have faced increased rates of COVID-19-related hate crimes, as reported in the media. A sector of our university community might be exposed to these realities.
• While millions of Americans are being asked to stay home, many immigrants and people of color who hold front-line, low-wage sector jobs—service industry, health care, elder care, food services, delivery workers, construction—with little or no sick-leave or on-line options have had to face the Solomonic choice of exposure or family survival. Many of our university community members have family members who fall into those categories.
• Additionally, language barriers are preventing many people from receiving and understanding vital public health messages, as well as understanding the availability of resources.
• Finally, already unprotected populations, such as the detainees at the border, and the homeless, are at huge risks of both, infection and increasing attacks.

Diversity & Inclusion would like to remind you to let us know of any incident taking place, university-wide, at the Hate and Bias Reporting site, https://www.unr.edu/bias-reporting. On the other hand, we also want to remind you that as it has been stated elsewhere, not everything is on lock-down: learning continues, creativity continues, community continues, and more than ever, solidarity continues and is vitally needed!

This email drips of bias, bigotry, and seething hate. It is incredible that the University of Nevada, Reno, allows the fact-free tirade to go out under its name. The sad part is there is no meaningful way to explain how wrong this email and the indoctrinated thinking is that led to it--no borders, globalization, increased rates of COVID-19-related hate crimes (is this a new hate crime category?), White Americans stay home and immigrants and people of color work with Solomonic choice (!), unprotected populations like detainees at borders. Of course, the email ends with Marxist call for solidarity.
