President Trump's top health advisers said Tuesday that models show between 100,000 and 240,000 Americans could die from the novel coronavirus even if the country keeps stringent social distancing guidelines in place.
Without any measures to mitigate the disease's spread, those projections jump to between 1.5 and 2.2 million deaths from COVID-19.
Dr. Deborah Birx explained the data, which underpinned Trump’s decision to extend social distancing guidelines to the end of April, at a White House briefing on Tuesday, urging the public to steel for difficult weeks ahead while expressing hope that the efforts would reduce the spread of the coronavirus.
“There’s no magic bullet. There’s no magic vaccine or therapy. It’s just behaviors,” Birx, who is coordinating the federal government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, said, adding that those behaviors could change “the course of the viral pandemic.”
Trump, who has adopted an increasingly somber tone when speaking about the virus, urged Americans to heed the guidelines while warning of a “tough period” ahead.
“We’re going to go through a very tough two weeks, and then hopefully ... you’re going to start seeing some real light at the end of the tunnel,” Trump said in remarks from the White House briefing room Tuesday evening shortly before Birx spoke.

Within the next two to four weeks, based on the predictions given to Trump, we will know if people are lying to Trump and the American people to make Trump look bad or they are giving Trump accurate projections because they're trying to help Trump and the American people.

2 million dead is absolute worse case scenario with zero mitigation...we won’t come near the 200K prediction with methods put in place now. Overreaction necessary to keep the media from way overplaying their band and stirring everyone to a frenzied panic. There will be hospitals that are busy and hospitals sending people home with nothing to do. It’s still just a flu.
I think it's real and the President and Vice President are doing a great job. IF we all do our part these numbers may be less. If we have the attitude that it's just the flu and carry on normally we're contributing to pain and suffering and undercutting President Trump.

I have been following the Univ of WA website. Very helpful and updated everyday.

Compare those numbers to what is listed by say Worldometer and see how close the projections are. There is the mean projection as well as the low and high projections. All very interesting as the govt is using this particular model.

How come they keep saying this when we know we have a treatment that works in most cases?
This claim works in Trumps favor either way. If the projections hold true, he will claims he has been honest with the American People and has done everything possible. By the way, I think he is being honest. It also allows him to justify any future actions he may take regarding this matter. If the numbers fall far short, he will take credit and rightfully so.
Zero mitigation. As we know, many FReepers want exactly that.
Any efforts to order a shelter in place is “unconstitutional”.
My only criticism of today’s presser is that it is potentially placing a crushing weight of guilt on folks who will torment themselves with coulda/woulda/shoulda if someone in their circle of friends succumbs to the ChinaFlu.

And at what point does “emergency” become normalcy-—15 days, another 30 days, “O, Dr. Fauci says we need another 90 days...”?

First off: The Hill and panic. What a shock.
Second: Dr. Fauci Duci Doo should be isolated because he is a cancer. Trump needs newer voices who have no bureaucratic, DC connection. This guys is the worst person to be anywhere near this right now. He is a bureaucrat first and a doctor last. His DNA is all about prolonging problems and not solving them. He is the ultimate functionary.

And to boot, he is a coward. I watched him this weekend and it was pathetic. First, he excuses his past erroneous estimates and projections by playing on the limitations of modeling and projections as being based on, and only as good as, assumptions. Then he proceeds to give the latest projection and caps it off with a great big poop cherry of “But don’t hold me to that.”
Foget that I screwed up yesterday, today I am on it, but don’t hold me to that.
Third: I love how any estimates and models about this virus are sacrosanct. If you don’t believe them or accept them, according to the MSM you are not taking this disease seriously.
I am taking it very seriously.
But just one little ole question. Why is that estimates and projections about the collateral damage and deaths that may result form the destruction of our economy are INSTANTLY dismissed?
Why is that?
Who knows, but I am sure Fauci the Magnificent will save us all, even if it kill us.
But I will tell you this. They are running out of fear darts. People are starting to have the fear of how they will pay the mortgage, how they will afford health care, how they will survive. That fear is putting the teeter totter to the other side and when it hits the ground COVID-19 is going to fly like it was shot out of a catapult. And that will be tragic.
Dr. El Duce should start mouthing these words: “I Don’t Know.” He should start realizing that if you are perceived as crying wolf, soon nobody will listen even though you might be correct.

It’s a balancing act, to be sure. And the end result is completely unknown. Do we put America back to work now and cut our economic losses and except maybe 2 million dead?
Do we accept local and state officials demanding that we shelter at home in an effort to save millions of lives but at a cost of trillions and trillions of dollars?
I wish I had a crystal ball. I wish I knew the answer. But right now all I can do is trust my president.
