The American Civil Liberties Union and Planned Parenthood Federation of America filed a lawsuit Monday against Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds' order halting abortions amid the coronavirus pandemic.
Pat Garrett, a spokesman for Reynolds, told the Des Moines Register Friday that the governors' proclamation earlier this week to suspend "non-essential" medical procedures through mid-April included surgical abortion.
The lawsuit "asks the court for an emergency injunction to block the Governor's Proclamation as it applies to abortions," an ACLU of Iowa statement said Monday.
"Abortion is an essential, time-sensitive medical procedure," Planned Parenthood's Iowa Executive Director Erin Davison-Rippey said in a statement. "We are in a critical moment for our state when we must come together to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, not politicize health care services that are constitutionally protected. Iowans are doing all they can to protect their families and communities during this pandemic and Planned Parenthood is focused on providing our patients with crucial services they need."
The Iowa Constitution grants women a fundamental right to abortion, according a recent Iowa Supreme Court ruling, which the lawsuit cites.
Reynolds has been a vocal pro-life advocate for years and in 2018 signed one of the most restrictive state abortion bans in the nation into law, known as the "heartbeat" bill, banning the procedure after six weeks.
The pro-life governor has defended her position and said it is not because of her ideology, but part of plan to deal with national shortage in medical equipment during the pandemic.
However, the lawsuit says the governor calling abortions non-essential procedures "flagrantly defies clear and binding constitutional precedent," showing "protected liberty interest in terminating an unwanted pregnancy."

No matter how they dress it up, virtually EVERY abortion is elective surgery. In only a very SMALL fraction of instances, shall the failure to have the abortion actually result in grave and imminent danger to the mother, while every one of abortions undertaken then results in a 50% mortality rate.

True, the Iowa director may be like that female doctor in the video who bragged she wants her Lamborghini from sale of better dead baby parts on the market. Loathsome. And never “essential”.

It is a sickness with these pro-abortion types.
They view any “restraint/restriction” as the camel’s nose into the tent on a permanent ban.
It must be allowed to continue without interruption no matter what the cost to the patient, or anyone else.
It is ghoulish, and demented. They are incapable of rational thought.
Yet, they would be perfectly fine and even encourage a gun confiscation, even going house to house violating the 4th amendment in the process.
But a penumbras is the most important thing no matter what.

And those masks , PPE’s etc can be put to better use
Change them to BIRTHING CENTERS, many women are going to try home births, if you have a OB NURSE OR MIDWIFE it might be fine until you run into the need for breach or C Section births. Takes a lot of training, fetal monitor, heated isolette. Just update it to a delivery room. And don’t let them go back to the other baby killing places.
Having had my first 3 in hospital it was as stripped down as a PP room. 2 of the 4 were C sections 10 yrs apart, not much had changed. Sure wasn’t as nice as today’s are.
Baby killers. .....ACLU is a major part of what’s wrong in the country.
There are no medically necessary abortions. None.
In instances where surgery is required it’s an ectopic pregnancy or something else requiring surgery and the baby is lost indirectly/ancillary.
Gotta keep killing the kids!
