While it might be impossible to figure out who is going to become sick with novel coronavirus, some public health experts believe the more critical question may be who has already been exposed.
In Telluride, Colorado, last week, one biotech company put that idea to work.
United Biomedical is now working with San Miguel County, which includes the famous Rocky Mountain ski destination, to test all 8,000 residents for COVID-19 antibodies -- making it the first community in the country to do widespread antibody testing. The idea, officials said, is to learn from an individual’s blood whether there is evidence the person has already been exposed. With that information, officials can then make decisions about whether quarantines and restrictions would need to continue and whether they need to be as widespread as they are in states and cities across the country right now.
"The goal of this is to show you can predictably get an entire county back to its new normal as quickly as possible by using testing," said Lou Reese, co-CEO of United Biomedical and its COVAXX subsidiary.
Reese stressed that, if successful, the testing program could be expanded, "starting at the hot-spot areas right now to solve this problem, stop the panic and get people to their lives and back to work."
The science behind the testing concept is not complicated. Every person who contracts the coronavirus will develop antibodies in their blood, usually within 10 days, even if the individual has such a mild case that there are no symptoms. Antibodies are proteins that help the body fight off an intruding virus -- but they’re also unmistakable forensic evidence of where the virus has been.

The only way out of this is herd immunity, whether through vaccine, or widespread infection. And a vaccine is many months away.
America and the world have been flying blind in trying to understand Covid-19. Only now are we merely starting to understand the spread of this virus through testing of the sickest people. There is very little testing of people with few or no symptoms, to really understand Covid-19 spread (the R0 figure) and true fatality rates.
The other half will be anti-body testing, to understand how many Americans have actually been exposed, and when we will have herd immunity.
See, the whole country should be run just like Colorado...

I am pretty sure I got this bug from my daughter in January. She works in a Hospital and got it from her friend that works in a different Hospital. This was the first time I had been sick in over 20 years, for me it wasn’t that bad, my wife was much worse and my daughters co-workers that got it, some were REAL BAD!, but everyone recovered in a couple weeks.
They already did this in a town in Italy...
They didn’t have the antibody test, but they tested EVERYONE, and isolated those positive, and let every ones live their lives.... and surprise, surprise that town didn’t get decimated by the virus while it raged in towns and cities around it.
Of course, they had no one coming in and out of the town either during this time.
My daughter believes she got it in early January as well, before it was identified very well. She and her husband were very sick for over 2 weeks and had the symptoms that I've seen published.

The problem with Covid-19 is the symptoms mimic the flu.
So, we will never know if they had it or not.

The death rate, for those under 50, for this seems to be relatively low.... once you get over 60 it shoots up, and over 70 and 80 you are you looking at 20% or higher mortality rate.... .
No that doesn’t mean you can’t be perfectly healthy 20 year old and not wind up dead... it just means the odds of you dying from it statistically very low.
What I would like to see is how many younger cases are “CRITICAL”, because even if you survive, if you are on a ventilator for weeks, I don’t care what age you are, that’s some serious long term damage.... Doesn’t mean younger folks won’t eventually get better... but even if you survive, after being on a ventilator for weeks you are going to have long road ahead of you.
From what I have read, and I am no way pretending to be an expert, but it appears if you wind up on an ventilator, your odds of survival are in the 15%-20% range or so if my memory serves, if that... So if you reach the point you are put on a ventilator, odds are NOT in your favor that you are going to survive at that point.
Sad, but apparent reality of this, at this point.
I personally believe a LOT more people have had that, than any of the numbers are currently showing... This bug’s been here “officially” since January, but probably before that, and no testing of any serious numbers happened until march... so lots of folks had this, got told they had the flu, and life went on for the majority of them.
Similar experience at the end of December. My daughter got the symptoms a day after me. Both of us had the flu shot. I never get the flu until this weird bout of illness. One day of a severe sore throat, several days of a low grade fever, fatigue, and overall body aches. Cough and wheeze. Recovered in about a week. I would love to get an antibody test.
Also, depending on what research you read, the asymptomatic folks (people who get it but never display symptoms) are around 20% of the cases, on the low end of estimates.... meaning 1 in 5 people who have this thing, never display any symptoms.. or at least not symptoms that warrant them seeking any sort of medical attention.
From what I am reading, being on a ventilator means essentially game over. One study said that 31 out of 32 patients on a ventilator due to the virus died. Some patients were on the ventilator for weeks.
Yes if you are on a ventilator it’s about 15%-20% survival rate from I’ve seen overall..
Lack of adequate oxygenation eventually causes organ or systemic failure
I know it sounds cold, but unless we get the survival rate up after intubation one has to start to question whether we are simply prolonging suffering for most patients. I don’t think any patient over 70 has recovered once intimated. May be no one over 60.
