Based on Dr. Zelenko's protocol of HCL combined with Zinc Sulfate and Azithromycin, the presumed mechanism is: HCL breaks open the virus, which allows zinc to enter it and halt its replication. The Z-pack is there to protect the weakened patient from opportunistic infection while the body clears itself of the immobilized virus.

I suspect further study will show that those for whom HCL alone didn't work were zinc deficient. We normally get trace amounts of it from diet, but depending on what and how you eat those levels will vary.

I have seen speculation the other way too, especially in the French tests where zinc was not given - the HCL opens up the virus, the azithromycin rips up the tRNA growth or replication process (which are two theories of how AZM works on bacteria) and the virus disintegrates.

Macrolide antibiotics are *weird* things.
