My simplification, Keynesian theory is that in a economic depression government stimulus might get the economy moving. To compare this to the 2008 Stimulus bill, which wasn’t a depression either, it was the election result on top of the bail-out.

Unlike a true depression, when this shut down is over, many people will still have money to spend, and just like the ‘cash for clunkers’, some commodities have just been bought in advance.

I’d say be real careful with the fiscal stimulus because someone will have to pay the debt. Yes some people do desperately need help, while some can bridge the gap.
