The front page of The New York Times edition for March 27 illustrates the staggering rate of unemployment in the US due to taken to stop the spread of the novel coronavirus.

The page features a chart showing the number of unemployment claims filed last week, as a growing number of states impose lockdowns and "stay at home" orders.

Over three million claims were filed last week — millions more than the number of people who filed claims during the 2008 recession.

It wasn't fear mongering which spread it so far and wide in NYC. It was statements by NYC leaders urging residents to attend Lunar New Year events in Chinatown in early February and implying that anyone who did not was racist and xenophobic.

Those statements have now been disappeared into a "memory hole" though Tucker Carlson aired a few on his show last night.

The engine that drives our prosperity is productivity. That has now been killed, and so we will lose our prosperity. The “stimulus” will do almost nothing.

We have to have people working again. We cannot have millions of people living off the government. It’s unsustainable. The government doesn’t create value. It creates valueless paper money. Once it’s sent to the folks, it will have an inflationary effect, which will not be felt because the bottom has fallen out of the economy, and we are in deep excrement.

The unemployment claim data posted this week tells a pathetic story.

1. The total number of national new unemployment claims is 3.28 million.

2. Nearly 400,000 of them come from Pennsylvania alone -- more than twice as many as any other state.

3. Pennsylvania, up until this week’s unemployment claims report, wasn't even among the top ten states in the U.S. in terms of reported COVID-19 cases or fatalities.

4. The same goes for Ohio, which is #2 on the list with almost 200,000 claims. Ohio (population 11.7 million) has about the same number of unemployment claims as California (population 40 million).

5. In terms of the economic impact of this fiasco, this was really a disgraceful blunder on the part of the stupid governors of these two states -- who brought financial ruin upon their constituents for no damn good reason at all. Pennsylvania, for example, has 400,000 people who are now out of work ... and only 15 reported COVID-19 fatalities.

Seems ballpark. We still haven’t had the aftershocks that will hit the economy. Construction slow down in particular. I saw one home seller locally was requiring potential buyers to wear a mask to view the house. Good luck selling that one.
