Rapid increase in coronavirus cases aboard US aircraft carrier
CNN ^ | 03/26/2020 | Michael Conte

Washington (CNN)There are now 25 sailors who have tested positive for the coronavirus aboard the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, just two days after the Pentagon announced that three sailors aboard the ship had tested positive for the virus, a Navy official has confirmed to CNN.

The Navy says they expect there to be additional positive tests among the crew, with one official telling CNN there could possibly be "dozens" of new cases that emerge. A second official said that were there to be a large number of additional cases, the Defense Department would be unlikely to publicly specify how many of the Navy's overall cases are amongst members of the crew of the Roosevelt, due to concerns that adversaries such as China or North Korea could see the ship as vulnerable.

Despite the outbreak, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday said in a statement, "we are confident that our aggressive response will keep USS Theodore Roosevelt able to respond to any crisis in the region."

Are any of them even sick?

I’ve been exposed to every flu bug in the last 70 years. I probably would have tested positive for all of them. I don’t think I have actually been sick from any kind of flu for the last 30 years.

Testing positive does not mean you are sick. It means your immune system has attacked the virus.

I’ve been on ships when a nasty bug ran through. It can spread very quickly and definitely take the ship down a notch as far as readiness. Hopefully most of these guys will just get crappy flu like symptoms, but there will be some who are serious.

It depends on the test. An antibody test.. yes. An rna test, such as the ones for lab covid are testing genetic material, not your bodys immmune response.

Doesn't necessarily even mean that. Means you are infected (if accurate).

This virus is a great bioweapon. The fact that it is highly infectious and makes some sick and some incapacitated makes it so. A bioweapon doesn't have to kill, just decrease or inhibit the readiness of the enemy. 45 years ago the USAF feared the Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis to be used as such and made a vaccine for the disease. Lucky for horse owners it was used when VEE crossed the border and began to kill thousands of horses in Texas. There are several other bioweapons/viruses with the same capability and need to be watched closely.

Now is also a prime opportunity for an enemy or a terrorist to unleash another agent that would initially be missed because of the Wuhan Virus.

The article says their most recent port was Vietnam over two weeks ago. We are supposed to believe symptoms appear 2-14 days after exposure. I would love to know when their symptoms first appeared as it has been over 2 weeks that they were in port.

Three days after getting underway we usually had the crud. Corpsman just handed out Sudafed and it went away in a few days.

A great asymmetric warfare bioweapon.

There may be an outbreak of Sudden Jihad Syndrome.

**Venezuelan Equine Encephalitis**

i remember that! It was around 1963 when it hit the US and killed lots of horses, and infected a few humans.

I feel bad for the sailors, but this will be an excellent source of data regarding the Kung Flu.

Yep, “the crud” was really common, and a few times we got some really resilient bugs. After one visit to Mumbai, the entire crew was sick for about a week, then had a lingering dry cough for over a month. We almost weren’t allowed to pull into Australia over it, but were finally cleared. Tight spaces, water tight doors and hatches, common dining spaces, shared computers, tools, test equipment, etc, stacked bunks, common heads and showers. It’s hard to avoid the bugs that go around.

They are pulling into Guam. That’s good. Very humid. The Diamond Princess pulled into the driest port in the whole Pacific (Yokohama).

One of my fears is that this could spread to the nuclear submarine fleet and put our defenses at serious risk. The Navy would never report a problem like this for security reasons but I hope they have a plan to deal with this contingency.

Seems like humidity would just give the virus more damp surfaces where it stays active, no?
