The revolutionaries overthrew the Bourbons only to replace them with ... Napoleon.
How was that an improvement?

Many today wrongly believe that the French Revolution was a success. Back in the autumn of 2016 I suffered an aortic dissection; the inner layer of my aorta peeled off the middle layer all the way from the bottom of the arch to the top of my leg. I spent three weeks in the hospital while they tried to figure out what to do with me. Just before it happened I had started reading Carlyle's book on the French Revolution. That was the wrong thing to do while trying to recover from a very bad condition, wondering if I was going to survive, and thinking I'd never get out of that damned hospital. The most depressing thing I have ever read.
If anything like that ever happens again, I'll spend my time watching YouTube videos and reading the comments.

Men are born and remain free and equal in rights
. and the free communication of ideas and opinions is one of the most precious of the rights of man. Every citizen may, accordingly, speak, write, and print with freedom
~Marie Joseph Paul Yves Roche Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette~
"The people is always worth more than the individual
. The people is sublime, but individuals are weak.
"Lead the people by reason and the people's enemies by terror.
~Maximilien François Marie Isidore de Robespierre~
During the ten months of absolute terror, the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution, Robespierre and his followers, the Jacobins, ruthlessly murdered over fifty thousand people.

The French Revolution marked the beginning of socialism. It marched across Europe to culminate in the Bolshevik Communist Revoluton...its crowning achievement.

Napoleon was an abject failure. Look what happened to the French troops that went to Russia.
