The map was of the USA compared to the european continent in terms of latitude.
What you have to do is rotate the US to see how it over laps the European continent. You can’t compare latitude with area.
Even if you do, the area of Europe is slightly larger than the USA, not 1/3rd the size

I stand by my comment that you can fit approx 3x continental Europe in the same area as the US.
