Some uplifting news on the coronavirus front. The FDA announced Tuesday that it is approving the use of a new treatment for the sickest patients.
The agency said that doctors can now administer blood plasma taken from patients who have recovered from the infection. This plasma contains antibodies to the virus and the hope is that by injecting these antibodies into seriously ill patients, they can better fight the infection.
New York State plans to use the treatment in clinical trials. It will take some time before researchers know whether it works, but experts are optimistic.

Doctors in New York will soon test an experimental therapy for COVID-19 that uses blood from people who recover from the disease, according to news reports.
The therapy, known as convalescent plasma, takes advantage of the virus-fighting antibodies that are present in people’s blood after they recover from the illness, according to NBC News.
For the trial, researchers would collect plasma — the liquid portion of blood that does not include blood cells or platelets — from recovered COVID-19 patients. Researchers would then harvest antibodies against the new coronavirus from the plasma, and these antibodies would then be injected into people sick with COVID-19. The study researchers will then evaluate whether convalescent plasma improves disease outcomes.
There have been tests that show when a person is injected with the antibodies, that then stimulates and promotes their immune system against that disease,” Gov. Andrew Cuomo said at a news briefing Monday (March 23).
The trial, which officials plan to start this week, would only treat people who are seriously ill with COVID-19, Cuomo said.
This type of therapy is more than 100 years old and was used during the 1918 flu pandemic, a time when antiviral drugs and most vaccines did not exist, according to NBC News.
“It will take some time before researchers know whether it works, but experts are optimistic.”
But...Science! We can’t do anything at all until it’s proven!!!!

No one cure fits all. But the “experts” sure seem a lot more committed on the pricey ones.
I think I’d prefer the hydroxychloroquine and azithromycin cure myself......
Don’t we need an expert to tell us who the experts are? How else would we know?

To all medical professionals around the world:
My name is Dr. Zev Zelenko and I practice medicine in Monroe, NY. For the last 16 years, I have cared for approximately 75% of the adult population of Kiryas Joel, which is a very close knit community of approximately 35,000 people in which the infection spread rapidly and unchecked prior to the imposition of social distancing.
As of today my team has tested approximately 200 people from this community for Covid-19, and 65% of the results have been positive. If extrapolated to the entire community, that means more than 20,000 people are infected at the present time. Of this group, I estimate that there are 1500 patients who are in the high-risk category (i.e. >60, immunocompromised, comorbidities, etc).
Given the urgency of the situation, I developed the following treatment protocol in the pre-hospital setting and have seen only positive results:
1. Any patient with shortness of breath regardless of age is treated.
2. Any patient in the high-risk category even with just mild symptoms is treated.
3. Young, healthy and low risk patients even with symptoms are not treated (unless their circumstances change and they fall into category 1 or 2).
My out-patient treatment regimen is as follows:
1. Hydroxychloroquine 200mg twice a day for 5 days
2. Azithromycin 500mg once a day for 5 days
3. Zinc sulfate 220mg once a day for 5 days
The rationale for my treatment plan is as follows. I combined the data available from China and South Korea with the recent study published from France (sites available on request). We know that hydroxychloroquine helps Zinc enter the cell. We know that Zinc slows viral replication within the cell. Regarding the use of azithromycin, I postulate it prevents secondary bacterial infections. These three drugs are well known and usually well tolerated, hence the risk to the patient is low.
Since last Thursday, my team has treated approximately 350 patients in Kiryas Joel and another 150 patients in other areas of New York with the above regimen.
Of this group and the information provided to me by affiliated medical teams, we have had ZERO deaths, ZERO hospitalizations, and ZERO intubations. In addition, I have not heard of any negative side effects other than approximately 10% of patients with temporary nausea and diarrhea.
In sum, my urgent recommendation is to initiate treatment in the outpatient setting as soon as possible in accordance with the above. Based on my direct experience, it prevents acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), prevents the need for hospitalization and saves lives.

Why?
Actually, they do something similar with organ transplants to avoid the need for immunosuppressive drugs. They take marrow from the organ donor and do an infusion during transplant so that the organ has protection from the recipient’s immune system.
Sadly, I was not approved for it and have to take the drugs. They kinda suck, but not as much as dialysis.

The problem is supply. You can only harvest so much plasma from someone.

He wouldn’t be welcome in DeWhine’s Ohio. Looks like he is prescribing a miracle drug with getting a positive test first. Can’t have people defying the governor.
