Rural America watches pandemic erupt in cities as fear grows

The social distancing rules repeated like a mantra in America’s urban centers, where the coronavirus is spreading exponentially, might seem silly in wide-open places where neighbors live miles apart and “working from home” means another day spent branding calves or driving a tractor alone through a field.

But as the pandemic spreads through the U.S., those living in rural areas, too, are increasingly threatened. Tiny towns tucked into Oregon’s windswept plains and cattle ranches miles from anywhere in South Dakota might not have had a single case of the new coronavirus, but their main streets are also empty and their medical clinics overwhelmed by the worried.

Residents from rural Alabama to the woods of Vermont to the frozen reaches of Alaska fear the spread of the disease from outsiders, the social isolation that comes when the town’s only diner closes, and economic collapse in places where jobs were already scarce.

And who would be stoking that fear but our friends at the AP.

Actually AP, I live in rural America and I am watching this was sadness and wondering if now might be a good time to reconsider allowing for people to take a crap in the streets of said Big Cities. Could now be the time to stop giving out free needles to addicts?

Nah, everything was going swimmingly until this virus from Mars hit.

Nobody in rural america is afraid. We feel badly for those in urban centers who failed to isolate well, and might have spent their money on stupid stuff instead of hospital capacity and ventilators. We stand ready to help, to send what we can.

But the guy on the farm isn’t worried about getting this thing; he interacts with nobody, and nobody within 100 miles of him has it. And since city folk don’t take to coming and visiting rural america, they are safe.

Quarantine New York.

Are the vast majority of Americans supposed to sit inside while outsiders bring it to their towns?

I’m sitting here in the north GA mountains and the only thing I fear is the mind-gripping stupidity of our elected officials.

I live in rural America.
We think this is what naturally happens when people live to close together and the history of Egypt and other ancient civilizations bears this out.

City people made their choice and we made ours.

Writing like this article of tomfoolery is what naturally happens when people shell out a bunch of money for college and then don't enroll in anything which requires them to use real mathematics.

I live in Tokyo where, by every metric, things should be much worse than they are. The virus is here, but there is no panic except for the silly run on toilet paper and the critical shortage of facemasks. The vast majority of the public are acting intelligently, keeping appropriate social distance, using the sanitizers obeying the law — just as they always do.

Free needles for druggies? People crapping on the streets and in stores? These are beyond the comprehension of most Tokyoites.

Actually, I have no idea what would happen to a person who crapped on a Tokyo street, but I can guess two things. 1) It would be very very painful, and 2) he or she would never do it again.

They might not find a body.

Quarantine downstate NY.

Upstate is very desolate outside of a few small cities and has very few cases per country.

Albany is telling fleeing NYC redirects that they don’t have to self-quarantine.
