Can coronavirus spread through food or packaging?
Fox News ^ | 3/25/2020 | Brie Stimson

The virus also can’t live on imported food packaging, the FDA says, adding it could only survive on a surface for a short period of time, which, depending on the surface could be from a few hours to a few days.

FReegards Fury!

Love the correction and contradiction. That is the way!

I am with Justin Lessler, PhD who is my hero right now on this virus. He is on the Epidemiology faculty at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Univ. in Baltimore. But he is going by the nature of the virus as a coronavirus.

But you rang the bell when you said “at infective levels.” I am convinced that sufficient viral load is necessary for this thing to be deadly. (Though I do accept that there are “super carriers” just like we had with SARS classic.)

Three features:
It is a zoonotic virus. Do you need a citation for that?
It is a SARS like virus. Citation needed?
It is a novel coronavirus. Citation needed?

My position will be that the burden of proof falls on those who say that SARS-CoV-2 will be unlike other coronaviruses.

So there is a vector right there of getting all over your meat package.

I always rinse any raw poultry or fish before cooking it, plus disinfect the countertop, scrub my hands, etc., and promptly discard the packaging. I would think that the cooking process would kill any pathogens.

They found live CV-19 on hard surfaces of the plague cruise ship 17 days after it had been completely evacuated.

If it can last 17 days on hard surfaces then it can last days on food packaging. The Mockingbird Media can't make up it's mind.

Disclaimer - neither a FluBro nor Fearper.

I’m confused, which one is the FLubro thread? Is it where they run around like chicken little flapping their arms scared sh!tless over the flu, or is it the one where everyone is saying let’s get on with life and let the herd sort it out?

but if you notice, they didnt talk about the strength of the virus.

So it could just be remnants that wont do anything to you.

the tests on cardboard etc posted the strength of the virus as it decayed

My position will be that the burden of proof falls on those who say that SARS-CoV-2 will be unlike other coronaviruses.

From the CDC web-site:

"Can the virus that causes COVID-19 be spread through food, including refrigerated or frozen food?"

"Coronaviruses are generally thought to be spread from person-to-person through respiratory droplets. Currently there is no evidence to support transmission of COVID-19 associated with food. Before preparing or eating food it is important to always wash your hands with soap and water for 20 seconds for general food safety. Throughout the day wash your hands after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing, or going to the bathroom.

It may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads.

In general, because of poor survivability of these coronaviruses on surfaces, there is likely very low risk of spread from food products or packaging that are shipped over a period of days or weeks at ambient, refrigerated, or frozen temperatures."

- see https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/faq.html

Your comments about hand washing are so correct!

How does one know if they are one or not?

There are test kits out there, but you have to be a VIP to get one. [/jk]

FReegards Wuli!

"then the exact same concern would apply to the viruses from which folks obtain the seasonal flu, and if true it has always been true.

You are exactly right! All the other things that make us sick are still out there and this virus is another added to the list. I cook for the Day Care sometimes, like today, and the Health Department insists we do these things. Been doing it for twenty years or more.

I enjoyed your use of the word "Basta."

So it could just be remnants that wont do anything to you.

Or they are intact, but not enough of a viral load to pose a real problem unless you're licking the packaging.

The other CV-19

USS Hancock CV-19 in 1944.

And you're getting called out on that.

The found COVID-19 RNA on surfaces on the cruise ship.

Calling it "live" is neither accurate or precise.

The most recent study found COVID-19 survives on surfaces (in a controlled environment) up to 2-3 days on various surfaces:

"New coronavirus stable for hours on surfaces"
- seehttps://www.nih.gov/news-events/news-releases/new-coronavirus-stable-hours-surfaces

Think? How about ‘do’! You made me hungry! My typical supper is frozen mixed veggies, brought to a boil with 4 oz of water, then add a can of crm of chicken soup, add no more water.

probably a more precise way to put it.

I use the concept of viral load when protecting myself

Dont give a damn that CDC says you dont need to wear a mask or they provide very little protection

Every chance you have to reduce viral load is a good thing.

I bought some of those masks being made from that Nascar company. Doctors are using something similar to put over their N95 masks since they are running out. You can put them over your surgical masks as well to help with a better fit and another layer of protection
