The number of coronavirus deaths in Britain jumped on Tuesday, the first day of a national lockdown, while the government called for 250,000 volunteers for the health service and announced a temporary hospital would open in London next week.

In a TV message on Monday evening watched by more than 27 million people, Prime Minister Boris Johnson ordered people to stay at home, told nearly all shops to close and banned social gatherings including weddings and baptisms.

... Hancock called for 250,000 volunteers to help the NHS with tasks such as delivering medicines from pharmacies, driving patients to and from hospital appointments and phoning people isolating at home to check up on them.

“If you are well and able to do so safely, I would urge you to sign up today to help the most vulnerable people in our communities as an NHS Volunteer Responder,” Hancock said.

And in another vein - many of the people that would normally fill these roles in the NHS bailed from the UK and now work in other Commonwealth nations or the US.

Interesting that the acronym NHS was left out of the headline...

This headline and news story tell you all you need to know about this government-driven fiasco. The crux of what the British government is telling its citizens subjects is this:

1. “We are shutting this country down — even to the point of destroying jobs and businesses in ‘non-essential’ industries — to stop the spread of this disease.”

2. “We need 250,000 volunteers to put themselves at risk by helping us cope with this problem.”

This doesn’t make any sense. I have a better idea, you jackasses ... Let your country go back to work so you can HIRE 250,000 people to do the job.

In all of the UK...”The death toll from coronavirus in the United Kingdom has jumped by 87 to a total of 422 - the biggest daily increase since the crisis began.”

Memphis TN, in 1878 with a population of 50,000, had over 5000 deaths from Yellow Fever. That is, 1 in 10 died.

In the USA, the death rate from Coronavirus is 1 in 600,000.

Apparently over 400,000 have already responded to this.
The tradition of large-scale voluntary service at times of national need is very strong in the UK. The last time there was anything remotely n this scale was the 2012 London Olympics, when the 40,000 volunteer ‘gamesmakers’, in their snazzy purple uniforms, were for many the highlight of the Games.

All the best to them. My point is this: Why would the British government pretty much shut down the entire economy and lock people down for “safety” reasons, then turn around and ask 250,000 of them to put themselves at risk on a voluntary basis?

Nobody is being asked to put themselves at greater risk than would anyway be the case by observing the lockdown guidelines. I would have thought that for a government to acknowledge, in a situation like this, that it can’t do everything, but needs the active help of the people, is a symptom of societal good health rather than the contrary.

Scary part? Last I knew the NHS is the UK’s largest employer, with over a million employees.

Wonder what percentage of them actually see patients.
