good journalism would have taken a sentence to explain that trace quantities aren’t likely enough viral load to have a significant chance of causing infection.

Many readers would come away from this article scared they are likely to get infected 17 days later, i guess that’s the nature of journalism today scare people as much as you can

It’s interesting that even in the concentrated environment of the cruise ship, less than 20% of the passengers tested positive.

In the A/C filters, perhaps?
I doubt they were cleaned after the passengers left.

Researchers from the National Institutes of Health, CDC, UCLA and Princeton University previously found that COVID-19 can last up to three days on plastic and stainless steel. That study also found that the amount of the virus left on those surfaces decreased over time.

also:

SARS-CoV-2 RNA, not live virus, was identified on surfaces in cruise ship cabins up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess.

It’s a heck of a test that picked up identifiable RNA fragments 17 days later.

That study also found that the amount of the virus left on those surfaces decreased over time.

That makes sense because viruses need a human or animal host to survive. Touching a contaminated surface alone will not infect an individual because the virus must enter into the lungs via droplets from a cough or sneeze, or transferred to a mucous membrane (eye, nose, or mouth) by touching your face with an unwashed hand containing the virus.
