Several days old, but I think a comment from the NYC Department of Health lab director is interesting.

She said, “We know that the circulating virus right now that’s causing respiratory like illness or flu-like illnesses is COVID-19. You don’t need a test to tell you that," she said.

Perhaps NYC has such large reported numbers because they report any respiratory or flu case as Coronavirus.

I agree with her that people don’t need to go find a test site just because they’re curious whether or not they’ll test positive. If they test positive, though, how cool would that be to tell their friends?!

To be honest, I think this is what China did also.

I think it’s what its reports indicate.

“...Aside from patient and health care worker safety, the city is also discouraging the use of high-volume testing sites because they burn though the chemicals used to extract genetic material from the coronavirus....”

How about requesting increased production and supply of the chemicals?

No. COVID-19 symptoms are quite different from flu symptoms, and the doctors can see the obvious and distinct infection in the lungs.

Also, it doesn’t make sense to test the general population, because the extent of the spread depends on the absence, presence or extents of restrictions against spreading it.

Colorado is doing the same. However there is still plenty of flu and rsv causing respiratory illness as well. Right now it is taking us 4-6 days to get a covid 19 result

Birx said that while in the rest of the country very few of those who test turn out to be positive (Maine is I think way under 5%) ... in NYC, unlike the rest of the country, it's like 28 or 30 %.

So I guess the thinking is 'why test an infested population ... who really cares at that point, if they haven't already been exposed, they will be exposed no matter how hard we try.'

Every year a blue million people show up wanting a flu test. They do not care to expose healthcare workers or anyone else. Getting a pos flu test has little impact on their outcome. I always wonder, outside of high risk groups, who these selfish people are. It exposes oodles of people for no reason.

I’m in NY and it became evident to me Cuomo’s motive from day 1. Yes, we need additional resources and yes we need testing for those needing treatment but Cuomo wanted all of the country’s resources for NYC and for the future from day 1. Like yesterday he demanded all of the available ventilators. He claims Trump will cause people’s deaths but he wants to deny other states anything that is available. He’s even denying upstate, who he pretends doesn’t exist. New Rochelle was almost Canada to him. He almost enjoys stroking his own ego during a pandemic. NY hospitals have been underfunded by the state for a long time. He’s looking to restock at others expense, and yet the media just loves him.

Cuomo was just bragging about how NY is testing more people per capita than any other state or nation in the world.

And given that article is 5 days old, and it sounds like some of the comments are even older, I’m not sure if the article is still relevant.

FWIW, I think there’s a decent chance some folks will choose not to ask for a test. I’m amazed by the low test numbers Upstate. I’m wondering if folks who don’t feel that sick don’t want to be quarantined while they wait for results, or after if confirmed positive.

The local news media ABC,CBS,NBC have a lock on the hysteria that fuels these people living in a sanctuary city. Not having a leader who is prepared and able to instruct and direct and give much needed good information is another.

But the pandemic is Trump’s fault because the CDC didn’t have enough tests available?

....and 25 million surgical gowns, coveralls, gloves and face masks”

Certainly they don’t need THAT many at this point, do they?! What about the other states with high volume of patients and will be running short?
