House Dems' emergency coronavirus stimulus bill includes $35M for JFK Performing Arts Center
Fox News ^ | March 24, 2020 | Joseph A. Wulfsohn

House Democrats are being criticized on Monday for allotting expenses in their proposal of an emergency stimulus bill that has nothing to do with the coronavirus outbreak, including $35 million meant for the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

Following the Senate Democrats derailing the pursuit of a bipartisan-drafted stimulus bill, the House led by Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., offered their own version of a bill meant to save the economy as the pandemic has pummelled the stock market. However, buried inside the over 1,100-page emergency proposal is money meant to upkeep a popular destination at the country's capital.

"For an additional amount for 'Operations and Maintenance,' $35,000,000, to remain available until September 30, 2021, for operations and maintenance requirements related to the consequenees of coronavirus: Provided, That notwithstanding the provisions of 20 U.S.C. 76th et seq., funds provided in this Act shall be made available to cover operating expenses required to ensure the continuity of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and its affiliates, including for employee compensation and benefits, grants, contracts, payments for rent or utilities, fees for artists or performers,  information technology and other administrative expenses," the bill reads.

The next page of the bill indicates that $300 million would be allotted for the National Endowment of the Arts and an additional $300 million for the National Endowment of the Humanities. The bill also provides $100 million for NASA and $278 million for the IRS.

Such expenses, particularly the $35 million for the performing arts center, raised eyebrows on social media.

"$35 Mil for the Kennedy Center is essential for battling the Coronavirus, says Nancy Pelosi," the Federalist publisher Ben Domenech reacted.

The DeeperDemos jumped the shark with this utter monstrosity. The ugly truth is, most everyone is home. They are watching this as the true “goals” of the DeeperDemos has become widely known. They are in deep merd here.

The money should be for Industry and businesses...The arts come last.

35 million for the JFK Center? Sorry, Dems, if the JFK Center is failing, why not help it with your own money, not Americans who never visited it. What does that, money for Planned Homicide and union representative on airline boards have to do with Covid-19??

I've said this on another thread but I will say it again, Mitch McConnell needs to change the Senate rules to allow his other Caucus members to vote remotely. He said previously that he would not, but in the case that it is a National Emergency, as is claimed, there's no reason why he can't change the Senate rules to make an exception for a National Emergency ONLY to allow remote voting.

And I'd bet that as soon as we find that a vote is done we will learn that 3 or 4 Senate Democrats should have been self isolating as well, or tested positive. I'd bet money on it. Watch and see.

No, no, no! I can never afford to go to those places. Only rich liberals can. Let them pay for their own entertainment, out of their own pockets, not out of ours!!!

PDJT can win the optics if they show a copy of the bill without the Dem pork. He needs to show how they are hurting Americans. A lot of people get their version of the world from CNNMSNBCCBSABC and thus will not even know this is Dems/pelozis/schumers fault...this is why PDJT needs to not a t like President Bush in this case...too important to care about that...get out the brass knuckles and show he is fighting for our sustenance.

You really don’t understand. The Kennedy Center is huge. There are a lot of full time workers at that place and they are as out of work as any other worker, if not more so. It’s as important part of the local economy as a factory may be to a different town. There is a concert hall, opera house and a broadway theater, as well as, a number of smaller venues. Most are full every night.

People come from out of town for performances so nearby hotels are empty and taxis barely run in the city anymore. Taxi companies will have to be made whole.

The cost of the shutdown will be massive and this bill is just the second of many to come.

I’ve said for many years we as a party fail badly at messaging.

McConnell who read like a drone a few things he was “outraged” by the Dems but it sounded only like a higher tone then his usual ‘low tone’. Compare that to the Dems, Schumer you can really feel the anger come through the TV.

Cotton and few others have that rage and anger but not McConnell.

Anyways President should read the list that Dems added to the bill- no one will know otherwise because they will say it is fake news.

He should say, this is why your checks are going to be delayed.

A Dem President would do it in a heartbeat!!!

Mitch needs to change the dam rules or this thing will pass as DEMS have a majority now.

STUPID RAND and others who chose to use the gym and pool at this time.

I hate to say it but our party will cave on most of what is in the bill. Dems will win again.

Exactly. That's why the question of funding "the Arts" should be the subject of separate legislation, rather than buried deep in a massive pork barrel.

With McConnell it is fake outrage. I am quite confident he wants most of those things in there as well. He’s used to being the loser partyleader.

, yes I agree with you that President Trump should read the list of items in the bill we have right to know and the American people has a right to know because nobody in the media is going to cover it from the chambers of the house. Just like you said he should say this is why you were checks are being delayed.

Wow, talk about tone deafness in the Pelosi/Schumer death to America collusion conspiracy! Perhaps they can get Trump to go see a play at the JFK Performing arts center(sarcastic built in irony summation incoming...) with known anti-Trump disgruntled actors playing their parts...../s

“nuff said...in case the secret service is listening in.

What you write sounds good.

But bud, it ain’t going to fly.

Not in this bill.

The common people carry this country on their backs and they use common sense to guide them. The Elites do not have common sense.

Add a provision in the bill promising the funds next year, perhaps AFTER the virus goes down to some small percentage.

Because if you think my niece the hairdresser who lost her entire business because it’s located in a retirement home is going to jump up and down with joy that the Kennedy Center is going to be renovated...

.....well I got a bridge to sell. Cheap.

I’m for culture and such as the Kennedy center, but using the common sense I have as a common man, ....NOT NOW!

Sorry Dave, publicly funded “non-essential” needs to go. Period. At least that is how the Republican platform used to be.

Why does there have to be an entire performing arts center dedicated to a dead democrat? Think Lincoln Memorial.

Absolutely. I think they are purposely trying to get President Trump to veto the bill so they can use it (with the full participation of the willing and compliant media) as a political club.

You would think that the solution would be for Trump and the Republicans to simply list all the things inserted into it that have zero to do with the crisis, but using their tried and true tactics, I have come to the conclusion that they think on the Left this is their best hope to bring down Trump in the election.

We should have known Congress would be incapable of finding a practical solution to this problem. They simply aren’t practical people. Now that they have once again failed the American people Trump should issue an Executive order to triple the unemployment payout amounts immediately and another EO to have the IRS issue a tax rebate to all individual and corporate filers of returns from 2018.
He could rescinded it at the time he deems the National Emergency is over.

This would get cash into the hands of those who need it quickly.

Tell me why that won’t get the job done.

I hope that during the two hour townhall today, President Trump lists each line of wasteful spending that both sides are trying to slip in to this bill. Disgraceful.

“So, as you contemplate the damage to the economy brought by the closure of the US economy, you may want to spend time pondering the damage done to the performing arts community, who only get paid by performance - at least many do.”

Who is going to attend these performances?
