I don’t recall any 3D printable plastic in common industrial use that doesn’t outgas. There’s some stuff for limited medical use.

People are already looking for solutions, but they take time and have dependencies. You can’t just build a fully functional 747 overnight from scratch.

It is possible to 3D print materials other than just plastic/s.

You're right. But I also don't have recreate the wheel either. Interestingly enough, Trump's presser that just happened, specifically mentioned companies gearing up to build ventilators. Guess it isn't that hard after all.

Ventilators require stuff made of plastic, and the materials used to 3D print in metal are not necessarily sterilizable in service. For example, you can print in Inconel but not medical stainless steel.

And yes, companies are gearing up to build them. Nobody except liberals and some impatient idiots upthread said they weren’t. Thing is, there’s still going to be at least some lag time, likely weeks. I didn’t say the hurdles couldn’t be overcome, just that what some people were expecting, that a car factory could be converted to crank out ventilators overnight, was completely unrealistic.

Isn’t inconel what they use in aircraft engines and race car exhaust? Very high temp resistance.

Inconel isn’t easily sterilized via chemical, though, and there’s some weird chemical interactions it has. I forget the exact reasons, but even the producers of Inconel suggest stainless steel alloys for medical use. Just because something has good heat resistance doesn’t mean it’s good for medical applications.

Forgot - the medical applications that Inconel *is* recommended for is in things like autoclaves and similar sterilization devices, not medical appliances.

This is way outta my expertise, I was just thinking if you can heat it to 1800F it’s gotta kill most anything.

You’d be correct if they were only autoclaving parts, so not far from the mark. Thing is, that takes a lot more time than chemical sterilization and would require dismantling the whole thing, as opposed to being able to disinfect and sterilize an entire ventilator with a quick chemical flush. Again, I do forget the specific reasons why, but you would want to use stainless steel alloy for the innards of a ventilator over an Inconel alloy. I vaguely recall it as something to do with the surface of an Inconel part plus incompatibility with chemical sanitizers.

We’ll leave it to the smart boys and girls. My buddy has a shop that fabricates Inconel headers for Nascar and Indycar. That stuff is mucho expensive.

Trump already has invoked the DPA. What would be so wrong with his authorizing it now?

Why isn’t investing in and stocking up on medical supplies a good idea?

I’d rather the Fed do that than send money out to people and businesses.

Wouldn’t authorizing the DPA also be a way to increase manufacturing jobs here in the U.S.?

Who said expendable? That's your word, not mine. How about you go back and re-read what I actually wrote before you step onto the soapbox of righteous indignation with your hurt little feelings.
