After watching the outbreak of COVID-19 for the past two months, I’ve followed the pace of the infection, its severity, and how our world is tackling the virus. While we should be concerned and diligent, the situation has dramatically elevated to a mob-like fear spreading faster than COVID-19 itself. When 13% of Americans believe they are currently infected with COVID-19 (mathematically impossible), full-on panic is blocking our ability to think clearly and determine how to deploy our resources to stop this virus. Over three-fourths of Americans are scared of what we are doing to our society through law and hysteria, not of infection or spreading COVID-19 to those most vulnerable.

Rank ordering based on the total number of cases shows that the US on a per-capita basis is significantly lower than the top six nations by case volume. On a 1 million citizen per-capita basis, the US moves to above mid-pack of all countries and rising, with similar case volume as Singapore (385 cases), Cyprus (75 cases), and United Kingdom(3,983 cases). This is data as of March 20th, 2020.
It’s one of those deals, though, that if you or someone you love is the person gasping for air while on a ventilator, it’s 100%. It may be a small risk, but nobody wants to take that chance.
There are a lot of other variables that are never considered...average age of the population, health of the population, etc. Chinese air pollution in the industrial areas is so severe that half of them probably already had lung disorders, for example, and Italy has the oldest population in Europe. So just the raw numbers don’t necessarily give an accurate projection.

If the world declared war on cancer, threw trillions of dollars at it, made it, hands down, the most important thing in the world, trained ALL medical research on it and sacrificed the most productive economy in the history of the world to fight it, we could probably cure cancer. Why use these resources to prolong the lives of a few thousand elderly, very sick individuals when you could impact millions by emphasizing cancer cure?
The Wuhan flu reaction is totally uncalled for and the most dangerous threat to America since communism.
Exactly the same as it is with any other infectious disease, not excepting the common cold. It's no reason to take down Western civilization.

This is also why we need to move on Hydroxychloroquine as a treatment, people need to know there is some hope and there is. It doesn’t matter if there are side effects from Hydroxychloroquine, even some deaths, it will heal more than it hurts and stop the panic

As coronavirus testing in the U.S. continues to lag behind that in other highly affected countries such as South Korea, several domestic startups are reportedly launching the first at-home tests.
The products have been greenlit by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration under new expedited guidelines to help combat the virus, according to Stat, a health care industry news outlet.
One such test provider is Nurx, a San Francisco-based company best known for home testing products for sexually transmitted infections and birth control, now offers testing kits for COVID-19 through the mail for $181 after prospective customers fill out an online form with their symptoms.
“We don’t look for the severity of symptoms, only the presence of them. They can range from mild to severe,” Nurx spokeswoman Allison Hoffman told SFGate.com. “But, people with truly severe symptoms should also seek immediate care. … In terms of temperature in particular, we determine a fever is 100.4 [degrees] plus.”
After filling out the online survey, Nurx will determine if testing is necessary based on the person’s symptoms and will mail the test via expedited shipping.
Nurx can give customers lab results within 48 hours of receiving the test, SFGate reported.
“We are pivoting from our prior service lines to make this available,” Chris Hall, senior clinical adviser for Nurx, told Stat. “It’s a heavy lift, but we think it’s important.”

Took the flu shot this year and this is the 1st time in years I haven’t been sick.
Yes, I am aware it is for specific strains but, haven’t been put in bed for 1-2 weeks yet and no doctor visit.
At least 3 people on the Live Thread have a history here of spreading panic all the way back to Pizzagate and undoubtedly before that little conspiracy theory.
Northern Italy has the worst non-city air pollution (NO2) in winter in Europe by far. It is created by the inversion south of the Alps. NO2 is known to facilitate the spread of respiratory viruses. Also correlated with PM2.5 but I don't have data for that.

When Hydroxychloroquine is finally “approved”, all those casualties between now and then will be attributed to Trump’s “incompetence” and the impeachment drums will beat again.
OK, you guys. I was expressing how people feel about this and why it’s so scary to many. It’s new and seems to be somewhat unpredictable. People have had the flu before or know people who have had the flu, but this is new territory.
People are always irrational when it comes to risk. They are afraid of chemicals in tiny, parts per billion amounts in things, but they drive without their seat belts on or smoke.
OK, here’s some evidence. Six days ago, there were 68 confirmed coronavirus cases in Texas. Yesterday, there were 395 cases and 5 deaths. At the end of the day today, that number will be close to 487 cases. At that rate of expansion, there will be 4,000 to 5,000 cases in Texas from now if nothing changes. Texas numbers are starting to look like NY and CA numbers, and those of many foreign countries that are taking a beating. The number of cases in Texas is doubling about every 64 hours. What is the “scary” number for you? What number is it going to hit before you start to get serious about staying home and not going out? And, if influenza averages 1 percent, then this is a greater death rate than that of the flu. And, you can say that 98 percent of the people tested test negative. That sounds great, but that’s still 2 out of 100 that test positive. Considering that this virus is showing to be 2.4 times as contagious at the flu, this seems to show that the worst is yet to come if nothing changes.
It appears that Medium has pulled the article. I guess helping people see all the “scary” data IN CONTEXT might interfere with the efforts to drive the panic and suppress resistance to the hyper-extension of government powers???
