Mike Rowe brings a dose of common sense to coronavirus panic

.... the Black Death in the mid-1300s killed 30–50% of the world's population. Modern medicine makes it unlikely that this will happen in the here and now.

All of this gets us back to Mike Rowe. He points out that, despite the lack of knowledge we have, Americans — especially Americans in government — are making instant, big decisions with consequences that may be disastrous and far-reaching. He writes, too, that people cannot perpetually maintain a state of panic. Even if we wanted to keep people locked in their houses for a year, wiping out entirely the American economy, Americans wouldn't put up with that.

From this, Rowe concludes that Safety First is not a sound principle. It's a panic principle that shuts down functionality. Safety is important, but if it becomes the primary doctrine driving a nation, the world stops, which is itself dangerous. In other words, Rowe counsels mixing pragmatism with panic, lest we make things in America so bad that we cannot recover from them:

Common sense is sorely lacking in a lot of today's population.

Only the common people have common sense. The elite have none.

America is doing really well with this lockdown but it won’t last beyond the end of March.

It just won’t.

If the Elite temporarily tune into our collective common sense they will figure it out.

President Trump tunes into the common sense.

Thank God.

I don’t know if this Rowe guy is right or wrong. But half of the chattering class is telling us to shelter in place. The other half is telling us not to shelter in place.

I guess this is to be expected in uncertain times like these. I’m just happy my Magic Eight Ball still works. It hasn’t failed me yet.

Magic Eight Ball, should I panic?

Rowe concludes that Safety First is not a sound principle.

I say this to my peers and clients all the time.

"Safety is our #1 priority!" is something I often hear from transportation agency clients.

"No, it's not," I say, "MOBILITY is your #1 priority. If safety was your #1 priority you'd shut down every road under your jurisdiction."

- they could be using this time to repave America’s roads and fixing the bridges- putting lots of people to work in jobs that you could easily ‘social distance’ yourself from the other workers- - instead, they will wait to do the work during rush hour and vacation time when the virus passes-

Could also use it as a time to hire loads of people walking along roadsides cleaning up the ditches & whatnot- cleaning city streets, back alleys, etc- stuff like this- lots of people out of work right now would probably love to be paid well to do these kinds of things- and jump at a chance to get out and just do something- Especially since they don’t require close contact with folks-

The Elite throw it away when they sign their souls over to the Evil One in order to become the Elite-

I’m really surprised it’s not higher. Because right or wrong, it’s a cover-your-butt kind of thing. Most governors will err on the side of caution. They’d rather be criticized for acting too quickly than be criticized for acting too slowly.

As of today, NY, CA, IL, NJ, and CT are, or will be, on "lockdown." These five states account for 31% of the U.S. economy.

Congrats, leftists.
