The Extreme State Lockdowns. The California and New York orders to stay at home are unsustainable.
Wall Street Journal ^ | March 20, 2020 | WSJ Editorial Board

California Governor Gavin Newsom on Thursday ordered the state’s some 40 million citizens to “shelter in place,” meaning they shouldn’t leave their homes except to perform essential activities such as picking up food or medicine.

Then on Friday Governor Andrew Cuomo of New York ordered all non-essential businesses to keep their workers home, as did Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont. Governor Philip Murphy of New Jersey said he would do so on Saturday. These actions got a federal imprimatur when Dr. Anthony Fauci of the White House’s response task force endorsed the degree of shutdown ordered by Governors Newsom and Cuomo.

The speed at which the government-ordered clampdown has escalated is remarkable. Last week most businesses were still operating albeit at reduced capacity as people heeded public health recommendations to social distance. Restaurant reservation website OpenTable reported that year-over-year reservations were down 38% in California, 43% in Connecticut and 49% in New York as of March 12.

Then on Monday these Governors ordered gyms, restaurants, casinos and bars to close and banned social gatherings of more than 50 people. It makes sense to limit opportunities in which people can transmit the coronavirus to large groups of people. But we wonder if such massive public lockdowns as these Governors have ordered are warranted by the available data on the virus’s course.

Mr. Newsom warned that more than half of California’s population could be infected within eight weeks, but that obviously frightening assertion assumes no social distancing or other precautionary public health measures.

We praised Mr. Cuomo in these pages for pushing back this week against New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio’s suggestion that New York City residents would soon be told to “shelter in place,” which caused panic across the city. Now the Governor has ordered a statewide shutdown

The exact this has happened here in Alaska, under Republican leadership. It’s flipping ridiculous, kids have been out of school for 3 weeks, and everything is shut down.
All for our 13 cases of people who have traveled recently. Instead of quarantining them, the entire state gets shut down. It’s incredible.

Of course these orders are not sustainable but these orders are not to protect the people. They are designed to destroy the economy of California and New York so the leftists can blame President Trump and get more low information voters to vote against him.

Leftists could not care less about people. They would murder millions of people to achieve their demanded ends. This is also why millions of babies are murdered each year in this country with no end in sight.

Back then we had a cousin visit from Poland. Every once in a while he would just walk around our local supermarket, marvelling at all the variety and quantity.

Thank you for a voice of reason!

It looks like the tinfoil hats are on in FR land.

This is a disease, folks. It’s a “pandemic” released by China through purpose or stupidity on the rest of the world. It doesn’t look like it’s Captain Trips, but its not nothing at all, either. Governments around the world are reacting, and I seriously don’t think that they are all self immolating in order to take out Trump.

Somewhere, there is an alternate reality where the Free Traitors had their way and governments did nothing. The happy little Bloombergs counted their shekels while the hospitals filled and encounter with the disease became unavoidable.

Right now, I’m tuning out the WSJ and the Free Traitors. We get through this disease with a low cost of life and as quickly as possible, deal with China, and get the economy roaring again. That’s the way to take care of business, and people, too.

My nephew sent me a meme something like "It's like in kindergarten where we all lose recess because a couple of kids don't know how to behave"

They didn’t build that, but they sure as hell know how to wreck it.

I tend to agree with your predictions. Slowing this down via isolation should bring it down to something more manageable while we test and ramp up treatments. It will be with us for a while, but gradually more of us will become immune.

"They just shut off the entire area to hiking, horseback riding, kayaking, fishing etc."

I'd contact my state legislators ASAP. Here in PA we have had some adjustments to the 'Corona Curtain' due to well-reasoned pushback. Initially the governor closed all the turnpike rest areas and replaced them with port-a-potties. There has been some improvement on that front, although services are still limited. The rationale was that truckers delivering food and TP need to be able to stop and have reasonable facilities available to them. The second thing we've seen is that initially the state parks were closed to the point of barricading the parking lots. The parking lots are now open and people encouraged to walk for exercise (and sanity) as long as they remain at safe distances. Our county was shut down very early (down to essential services a week ago already) because we led PA in cases. On the positive side, people are really connecting and supporting one another around here, and our case load has not gone into the stratosphere, despite neighboring NY and NJ.
