Factbox: Five statewide stay-at-home orders, 31% of U.S. economy [Sanctuary States]

The five U.S. states where governors have closed or have said they will soon be closing non-essential businesses account for about 31% of the world’s biggest economy.

Authorities have called such steps necessary to slow the spread of the coronavirus.

Here are some key facts about the collective economic heft of California, New York, Illinois, New Jersey and Connecticut, which individually rank No. 1, No. 3, No. 5, No. 8 and No. 23 among all 50 states by GDP.

California’s $3 trillion economy alone accounts for 14.5% of the U.S. output, making the state by itself a bigger economic powerhouse than all but four nations. Together, the five states produced $6.4 trillion in goods and services in 2018, Bureau of Economic Analysis data shows.

For reference, President Donald Trump’s administration and Congress are currently negotiating a $1 trillion-plus economic stimulus package, which equates to about one-20th of annual U.S. economic output.

How many hospital beds in these states are occupied by illegal aliens?

If I lived in one of these five dumps I would obey a lockdown order with the same enthusiasm they bring to the table when it comes to obeying our nation’s immigration laws.

I mean — do the dopes running these states really believe an illegal alien is going to obey a governor’s lockdown order? LOL.

What do those states have in common? I’ll start:

Liberal voters
Democrat governors
Big cities
High taxes

Or is that all being redundant?

If I lived in one of these five dumps

Those "dumps" are part of the United States of America, and home to tens of millions of American citizens. Millions of veterans, mothers, fathers, patriots, grandparents, small business owners, clergy, cops, blue collar workers, children, and the owner of this site.

The mantra of loathing on FR that any state that isn't "their" state is worthy of hate is both tiresome and ridiculous.

Don’t forget anti Trump. They hate Trump more than they care about their citizens.

It’s too bad that those fine folks live there. I was born and raised in one of them, and my family still lives there. But that doesn’t change the facts about them.

That is true. Their blind hate makes them no better than Leftists.

I live in a part of Connecticut where nearly 50% of us voted for Trump in 2016. American flags fly from many homes in my neighborhood. Lot of good people around here. Solid Americans.

One thing we are setting ourselves up to learn with a vengeance is that a modern economy is a very complex, interconnected system which is oriented toward supporting human life. When we allow morons in government to shut down economies (effectively shutting down societies) we are automatically on a path toward radical reduction of the resources to support life. I love this community, but lately I have been infuriated at seeing how many people here are content to let government micromanage their lives for the faint hope of an illusory “safety”. I hate to rant here, but in a community named Free Republic, why there so little outrage at the flagrant theft of our liberties going on now.

I’m with you. We’ve learned a lot about each other in the last couple of weeks, and it’s obvious to me that many “freedom-loving conservatives”’ain’t all they’re cracked up to be.

I’m concerned that so few here and in our nation seem to be aware that we are moving quickly to a Soviet style economy (and society after that) if things don’t change rapidly. Unlike the Soviets, the control isn’t enforced at the point of a gun - YET! It is troubling that so many here and in our country are either oblivious or just don’t care. I’m almost 70 and may not have that many years left. I don’t want to live them in a “prison nation”.

It turns out that an awful lot of people here are what can best be described as “keyboard conservatives.” That’s all you need to know if you’re wondering how you ended up living in a country with a fascist government and $23T in debt.

Thank you. I might add that much of these “dumps” are nicer than where the hatful posters live.

From a % of the population view, that may be the case. But look at those red/blue maps that are posted after elections.

Take NJ, for instance. Ignore Newark, Camden, Trenton, Paterson, and Elizabeth, and the communities one could visit across the state are almost all red. (Of course, why one would want to visit the "community" of Newark unless they had to, I don't know.)

I've seen maps posted of Illinois, and it's the same except for Chicago .. and maybe some college towns.

True. I think CT is part of the liberal sandwich between NYC & Boston. Actually Boston-to-DC metro area.

BS
While i agree people could be a lot more involved, and informed, the problem is
hard leftist have managed to work their way into positions of power.
By lying. And once they get into these positions of power they don’t let anyone else in.
Through entitlement programs..that now include giving illegals welfare.
What have you done to stop it?
Oh, that’s right you voted in election where idiots like McCain and Romney were our only choice.
As you well know..McCain supported Amnesty for illegals.
Romney was the forefather of Commiecare.
Then they took over the education system. Infiltrated the FBI, Other National Security Agencies.
They planted themselves throughout the media.
They have all but forced infanticide on us and make us pay for it.
What did you do about it?
oh, that’s right you voted in elections. Where idiots like McCain and Romney were our only choice.
Maybe you called your Congressman and gave him a piece of your mind?
They forced CommieCare on us. Supposedly one of our SC, was on “our side” tipped the scales with his thumb?
They allowed “dreamers” to stay.
They forced transgenders in girls restrooms on us..they couldn’t be okay with giving homosexuals Civil Unions..they had to call it “Marriage”
Americans overwhelming rejected all of these things but here we are.
I am sure you were there on the front lines taking action?
Being a good Conservative (hopefully not like Romney,McCain or even G.W)
Doesn’t seem like it did a lot of good.?

Since you are dishing out criticism and ad hominem attack, WTF have you done? Are you leading any kind of movement, even a local one?

I live in CT as well. Not only did my town vote Trump, we went all Republican in our locals as well. The number of those allowed meant some Dems were elected as well (incumbents), but we are now a supermajority of Republicans. Every single one who ran, was voted in.

While i am on a rant.
That is why the only way we can save our county is to drain the swamp (rule of law).
These infiltrators (traitors) need to,at the very least be fired without benefits, but preferably jail!
Some really deserved to be publicly executed.
Sanctuary cities need to stop.
As many as possible, if not all, of the illegals need to be deported or jailed if the continue to enter our country illegally.
Bring back workfare..bring back Line Item Veto.
And stop all this non-sense about same sex being “marriage”
and transgender competing in sports and with little girls in restrooms.
and 50 genders whack-O-ness.
and while we are at it cut the debt in half.
Although, if we did those things the debt would probably take care of itself.
