Florida's Gov. DeSantis Won't Order Statewide Beach Ban

A slew of popular Florida beaches have closed to keep away crowds of young people and seasonal visitors amid the coronavirus outbreak — but GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis defiantly says he won’t issue a statewide closure order.

Miami-Dade, Manatee, Sarasota and Okaloosa counties said Thursday they’d close their beaches, joining Naples, Tampa, Fort Lauderdale and Miami Beach as vacationers flood into the Sunshine State, Politico reported.

“I’ve stood by every local community… [beach closure is] great if that’s good for them. But I also think we’re going to be in a situation where if people are able to go out and be spaced out — so, these are not spring [breakers]. These are our neighbors who may need to go out there, clear their head,” he said.

Sanity. The numbers do not support economic suicide.

DeSantis is taking measured steps and is trusting his advisors. It’s nice to see a competent executive in FL.

He just ordered restaurants and gyms closed. I do like that restaurants are still allowed to do take out and delivery, so he’s giving them options to stay in business. So many big chains to take out now. Wait staff will be hit hardest, but cooks should be able to stick around.

The beach is probably the safest place.

All that UV light and a nice breeze.

I live in western North Carolina. There’s a lot of land around here and not many people. I understand if you have to shut down big cities like New York but most of America, the population is quite sparse.

He could say that he’s not closing the beaches but hopes the rumors of permanent impotence as a side-effect are not true. That’ll keep the college boys out and the old farts won’t care.

Wouldn’t it be a violation of those court decisions prohibiting a denial of public access to beaches?

There is no reason to travel to SW Florida...All restaurant's take out only..

now you cannot sit out side...stores have little food

Stores are mostly closed..All malls are closed

Cannot go to the beach where your outside and can keep away form people

And it is going to be shown that all this was a waste....

The old people are out and about...I think Sarasota has had one case..

My neighbor is a nurse in the hospital....the flu has been a big problem this year...Masks are the biggest problem ....no problem with an other equipment so far..

There is nothing to do if you come here....

If YOU don’t want to get infected and you are afraid of viral transmission at the beach, then stay off the beach. If you think the virus thrives on top of water towers or in sewers, then don’t climb water towers and don’t crawl through sewers.

Meanwhile, just mind your own business and leave everyone else alone.

Ah. Refreshing. He’s not a hard-wired rules-based idealogue saying that all beaches must be closed or all beaches must be open. common sense.

Time for more leaders to grow some and put a stop to this media-induced madness supported by the deep-state and deep pocket liberals.

I guess he figures his career was over anyway after having hordes of drunken kids cram armpit to armpit on the beaches and then depart - coast to coast - to spread whatever they caught.

Thank goodness. This lockdown is insane and unnecessary.

DeSantis did close some things today..I want to my favorite restaurant/bar for Happy Hour snacks and wine...and found that they had been shut down about an hour earlier. We had actually called to see if they were open and by the time we got there, they had been ordered to close.

This is NUTZ.

Perhaps the data will make you feel better. The death rate in New York for its relatively impressive numbers is currently 0.5%. Significantly more in line with the South Korea model. Utilizing the best theories of how much this is spreading (85% mild cases or asymptomatic) The death rate drops to 0.09% of that of the seasonal flu.

Be at peace and take joy that this is not as bad as it seems and query why we are so willing to hand over our freedoms. This is not the generation that won World War 2
