The School District of Philadelphia will not allow teachers to do “remote instruction” with students while schools are closed during the coronavirus outbreak, according to a letter sent to principals Tuesday night.
Because the district cannot ensure equal access to technology among students, it’s barring individual schools from providing graded virtual instruction.
“To ensure equity, remote instruction should not be provided to students, including through the internet, technology at home, by phone, or otherwise,” the letter read.
On Wednesday afternoon, after backlash and confusion among teachers, Superintendent William Hite clarified the district’s position, saying that teachers cannot require students to do work remotely or grade them on that work.

I may be missing someone, but it kind of makes sense. When they first started closing schools and scheduling these online classes, I wondered how many of these school districts could even be sure that all the students had online access.
Maybe it is because some students have parents that can’t read or write and therefore can’t do the kids home work.
I was worried about ‘equity’, glad they’re addressing it.
(rather than giving a crap as to whether the kids learn anything)

I’m just a tutor for a college, and we are scrambling to do remote tutoring through Zoom, and I foresee limited success, primarily because STUDENTS may not have easy access, never mind us.
“Technology” (a pencil is technology) is overblown, and we are so spoiled we presume everyone will have the same things and know all about it. And this time around, they can’t say “well they can just go to the library!”
Reminds me how the staffers at college presume everyone is a liberal and so they can spout off with impunity about anything anti-Trump or anti-conservative.
We knew this was coming. next up: Govt supplied Inet and a PC.
I wondered about that, too. How does a teacher know who is actually logged on and doing the work?
They don’t give a damn about the kids.
Better the equitable sharing of ignorance, than the unequal gaining of knowledge.

That’s been going an several weeks now. The cable and cellular companies are actually helping out a lot on their own dime.
Lots of schools issue iPads. iPads have cameras and can have cellular connections. Problem solved.
