Brenna Coogle frequented the Paramount Drive-In as a child growing up in Lakewood but hadnt been there in about 30 years.
On Tuesday night, however, she visited it for the first time in decades to take in a showing of Pixar Animation Studios Onward with her 9-year-old son and friends.
Moments before previews began, Coogle stood near her car under a darkening sky and considered how the coronavirus had upended daily life. She said the widening pandemic made her feel she couldnt go most places including a conventional movie theater and she yearned for a distraction.
So, Day Two of home school, we are all cooped up in the house, and this was a way to go out and still be distant from other people but not at our house, Coogle said. Advertisement
Drive-in theaters have long been viewed as an anachronistic diversion perhaps worthy of an occasional visit, if that. Now, though, several among the countrys 305 drive-in theaters are experiencing a surge in interest as traditional movie theaters, theme parks and other entertainment options are forced to close because of governmental advisories designed to increase social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak.

I have not been to one since high school.
Did not know there were even any left out there.
GREAT FUN...those.
All four of them?
There is one a few counties over but I’ve never been there.
I remember the Blues Brothers at the drive in as a kid.
Saw THE GODFATHER a few years ago at one :)
The cars were all full of us Italians.
Things got rowdy and I left with 3 holes in my front window.
The Miracle Twin in Burton, Michigan.
Spent some good times there when I lived nearby.
Sadly it is gone now.
I miss those places...
1957 Chev nomad with two fours and headers..got in there with a case of beer and a bottle of boones farm apple..
Get two spots and hang a speaker on each window.
Everytime I have a date there’s only one place to go
That’s to the drive in
It’s such a groovy place to talk and maybe watch a show
Down at the drive in

WTF!? The crews get mingled together?
In Plymouth, MI there”s a hockey arena/restaurant with three retractable movie screens in the parking lot. They bring food to the cars, too. Works well.
Churches may do summer parking lot services, too.
There’s 5 Families.
Who knew more than one would show up!!
Sounds like good times.
There are two operating drive-in theaters within 20 miles of us here in the south Puget Sound area - the Skyline on hwy 101 near Shelton and the Rodeo near Port Orchard.
Problem is the digital conversion with movies now days.
They don’t make them on film reels anymore - at least not many.
Most drive-ins can’t afford the cost of converting over to a digital projector.
All joking aside, there’s some areas in the boroughs where you can be in a Gambino neighborhood on one block and 5 blocks away be in a Columbo neighborhood.
At least back in the day.
They closed all drive in movie theaters in my state. Which is stupid.
