Much is being made of the fact that Italy – an advanced European nation – has become the hot zone of coronavirus impact. The implication is that if a First World country with the equivalent of “Medicare for All” could succumb to the pandemic, it should be really serious for the USA. Right?
Wrong! Despite all of the coverage and hype about Italy and COVID-19, some important information about the epidemiology or cause of the virus’s impact on Italy is being overlooked or ignored by the mainstream media. As the Times of India reported on March 19:
If there is one country that has suffered the most due to COVID-19 beyond China, it has to be the European country of Italy. But what is the connection between Italy and the novel coronavirus considering the deadly virus is reported to have originated from China? The answer is fashionably simple. The northern part of Italy has been a traditionally prosperous region due to the flourishing fashion and garment industry. Most of the big global brands like Gucci and Prada have their base in this region.
With China offering one of the cheapest manufacturing options in the world, it came as little surprise that most of these fashion brands were working with China. A large number of these Italian fashion and garment houses had outsourced their manufacturing to Chinese labour, specifically in Wuhan. Italy also has direct flights from Wuhan and reports suggest over 100,000 Chinese citizens were working in Italian factories. Chinese made a slow and steady move into Italy and many Italian fashion firms are now owned by them as well. As per a news report, there are more than 300,000 Chinese and over 90% of them work in the Italian garment industry.

Here’s another factoid -— From the Times of India again:
Nearly 60% of the population [of Northern Italy] is aged 40 and over, of which about 23% is over 65 years of age. This puts nearly one-fourth of the population at grave risk.
A new report published on the Open Science Framework by researchers at the University of Oxford over the weekend affirmed that Italy bestows one of the oldest populations globally 23.3 percent of citizens are over the age of 65 and many households are multigenerational, either still living under the same roof or close by with frequent large family interactions.
It is becoming clear that the pandemics progression and impact may be strongly related to the demographic composition of the population, the research paper states. Specifically, the population age structure. . . .
The Chinese will continue their usual practices of bribery, blackmail and intimidation of our public officials and media to keep us from really changing anything with them. It’s what they do.
Too many Americans don’t see that.
China AND both countries are heavy smokers...............
China needs to be shunned and banned from the world community. Destroying people and wealth without remorse, they must pay reparations. One person suggested they forfeit all moneys owed to them.
There was a study to come out today...Italian journalist had gotten a listing of the dead from the first four weeks. So three things stand out: one out of three dead Italians had diabetes. One out of three dead Italians were on blood pressure medication or had blocked arteries. Finally, virtually everyone had an age over 65.
What we have missing here is the Wuhan numbers and I suspect if you matched them up....same story. Most were older folks, or had asthma/COPD, blood pressure medication folks, and heavy-smokers.
If this is all true, this whole thing is totally overblown and not the drama that folks suggest.
1. Italy has a large elderly population.
2. Many of the elderly smoked cigarettes way too much in the past at minimum.
3. Northern Italy has some of the worst air pollution in Europe.
4. Italian cultural norms such as greeting people with a lot of physical contact and younger people living with elders contribute widely to its spread.
5. There are a large number of Chinese expatriates living in northern Italy, and many of them returned to China over the winter holidays at the worst of the outbreak in China.
Add all these up and no wonder the Italian death rate from SARS-CoV-2 is so high.

I don’t understand why the Wu Flu pumpers continue to compare it with genuine pandemics that hit the entire population like the Black Death. They’re not comparable at all yet here we are.
We could easily has a 10 trillion bill for the Wu Flu Panic of 2020 when this is all said and done. At 10,000 US deaths that would be a cool billion dollars spent per death. Lovely.
Yeah, well, if the threshold is 65+, I could be in big trouble, ‘cause I fit that description, and eventually most everyone is gonna catch this bug.
My Mom... Oh, golly.
Now if we could somehow come up with 100 million N95 masks a day, minimum, that would help a lot.
My family is in a better situation than most, but few (including my family) can isolate for months. And even if we could, what’s gonna be left of the economy when we come out?
Gotta pray for effective treatments to be developed. Fast.
Italy, Lombardy in particular, is a province of China as far as the Wu Flu is concerned.
We can thank God for placing this man of genius, forbearance, and profound morality at the helm. He has shed His Grace on America yet again.
Does the virus stick to clothing and for how long? If so, and for a long period to time, that would spread it to everyone who wore or touched the clothing. We always wash new clothing before we wear it. You can never tell who might have tried something on, especially women who try on everything it seems, that is what takes my wife so long in stores when she is clothes shopping!!! :-)
bkmk
Let's go your way. How many will be hospitalized? At once. How does most of the population not get this bug, in a few months, without the economy being shut down, Hubei style?
You can add obesity to the list of risk factors. Over 30% of Americans qualify. (Obviously most of those will have high BP and so on.) And even for those of us seniors who are relatively healthy, the risk of needing a week or two, maybe more for some, of hospitalization is very significant. Immune systems simply age, too.
We just get written off to hope we are lucky? Thanks.
No way is this comparable to the Black Death. But in absence of "heavy" measures to slow COVID-19, and no masks for most of the populace, what do you think the peak numbers needing hospitalization will be? (Add that to ongoing needs during flu season.)
My $2000 Italian suit is really Chinese!?
/s

Consider this: The Chinese New Year was in Wuhan in mid-January. It is a major celebration and Chinese from all over the world return for the celebration. Wuhan is the epicenter of caronavirus.
Did the Chinese government cancel the celebration due to the pandemic? No!!!!
Italy has a half million Chinese living there mostly working in the textile/leather industry. Did they travel to Wuhan for the Chinese New Year? You bet!! By the plane loads. Did they bring the virus back to Italy from the epicenter? You bet. by the plane loads.
Is there any wonder Italy is suffering like it is?
It's the world's largest human migration.
