...(2019-nCoV) in vitro (re-post)
Pharma company Bayer will soon make a large donation to the U.S. government of a drug that has shown some promise in helping patients suffering from the novel coronavirus, according to a senior Health and Human Services official and another source with direct knowledge.
Why it matters: It doesn't hurt to have a potential treatment on hand, but we're still a very long way from having an approved, clinically tested treatment for the coronavirus.
The big picture: Early evidence suggests that chloroquine an inexpensive anti-malarial drug may work just as well, if not even better, than remdesivir, a drug owned by Gilead, which is undergoing clinical trials for treatment of the coronavirus.
A study (published in Nature) found that "remdesivir and chloroquine are highly effective in the control of 2019-nCoV infection in vitro."
"Chloroquine shouldnt be left out of the discussion of candidate COVID-19 therapies and may actually be leading the pack," Raymond James (wrote in a research note) earlier this month.

Time for a gin and tonic! But all the tonic water is sold out, so others have the same idea. :-)
At his press conference Trump said he would be making a big announcement about the FDA by at latest tomorrow morning.
Perhaps this will be it.
This is going to get done. Trump is doing what he has to do to get a quick vaccine/cure.
I don’t think it will really take that long.
Laura Ingraham was talking about hydro chloroquine last night on her show so I looked it up, its apparently used to treat malaria and also lupus..I read the side effects Good God it makes coronavirus look like a walk in the park
What does Harvard,Columbia,Hopkins, the Mayo Clinic and Stanford have to say about this?
Look at the side effects of what is happening now what with millions of people on edge for fear they will lose their jobs.
Plain old quinine? That could undermine some of the screaming panic that is sweeping the country.
My wife read that Tamiflu is also proving to be effective.
If he is able to bypass all the Rats and RINOs that need to be paid off before the vaccine is “approved”
John Hopkins guy this morning on the radio said chloroquine and azithromycin, a very common antibiotic, seem to work very well. He and his team were finishing up a paper on it this morning for release today.
Plenty of tonic water left here in northern Virginia. Stopped off at the state liquor store for a bottle of Boodles just in case loser Gov. Coonman Northam decides to close them in emulation of the PA gov.
FWIW, bump.
Yes, except the amount of quinine required to equal the strength of the prescription drug would be .... a lot.
Thank you for positive and optimistic information!
But don’t you know you shouldn’t be posting information that might quell the insanity and media narrative? We CAN’T have anything positive or optimistic, for Heaven’s sake! Many FReepers are in full panic mode — and they LIKE it.
I, for one, am sick of people who are complicit with the RATs/MSM in purposely destroying the economy, and taking down PDJT. The panic was cute for a while, but it’s f-—ing time to grow the hell up.
Again - thank you for good info.
Does anyone know if there is a test to see if one has antibodies for the virus? Many of my family members had some kind of virus in February that we thought was flu, but now we aren’t so sure. It would be nice to know. The cough was horrible.
TAMILFLU AND TONIC!
And Gin!!
PA Governor’s decision to close the liquor stores is the STOOOOOOOOOOPIDEST thing I’ve ever seen.
Bars are already closed per the President’s guidelines. People are going to drink. If they are going to be inside their homes looking at the walls for 15 days it might actually help if they were mildly sedated.
He announced Sunday they’d close Tuesday at 9PM, sparking a 48-hour period of STAMPEDE PANIC BUYING before the state went dry.
No doubt far more virus was spread in THAT scrum than if the stores were just allowed to remain open at normal traffic levels.
Or a vodka tonic. Treats your head better the next morning. :-)
