A new Harvard analysis shows that many parts of the United States will have far too few hospital beds if the new coronavirus continues to spread widely and if nothing is done to expand capacity.
In 40 percent of markets around the country, hospitals would not be able to make enough room for all the patients who became ill with Covid-19, even if they could empty their beds of other patients. That statistic assumes that 40 percent of adults become infected with the virus over 12 months, a scenario described as moderate by the team behind the calculations.
Yet the Harvard estimates suggest that the coronavirus outbreak could require significantly more resources than that. In hard-hit Italy, hospitals have been rationing care for older patients who are severely ill with the virus.

It won’t play out that way. If local hospitals become inundated, the sick will be exported to areas not so heavily stressed, exporting the virus in the process.
Article is full of subjunctives: could...if...would. Fear and anxiety are running amok. Just like Dr Fauci saying Covid-19 is 10 times as lethal as the flu. There is absolutely no way to know that, because the data to draw that conclusion simply does not exist. Flu is not a reportable illness, so no one can know how many total cases there are. It is also believed that 80% of people ill with Covid-19 have mild symptoms. Even that is a guess, but if you have mild symptoms - maybe a short-lived fever or aches - are you going to go to your doctor or a hospital? Probably not. But no one knows! Unless Dr Fauci has much more concrete data that can be used to show his work, he is helping to stoke fear and anxiety needlessly. He is undoubtedly correct on other things - but not on the fatality rate.
And if a frog had wings, he wouldnt bump his ass when he hit the ground.
Stop with the National Enquirer level (gutter level) hysteria bullshit.
Bam!
What is your take on this?
Plus there are lots of Medical Schools with plenty of medical students who can just bag everyone who cant get a ventilator in the parking lot. You guys got nothing to worry about!
The fatality rate is going to go up some when you run out of medical students to bag people who cant get ventilators.
Tell me how an MRI helps you breathe when you have double pneumonia, sport.
How long are you in an MRI? Half an hour? Two hours?
Average time in the hospital with Kung Flu is three weeks (24x7).
Tell it to the 32-year old Cardiologist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.
(Ivy League, and not just a doctor, a cardiologist. You’d think he’d have gotten the best care possible, right?)
Thats exactly right. Surgical techniques have become so advanced that long hospital stays even for many major surgeries are no longer needed. Thats been the single biggest factor in the declining number of hospital beds across the country.
Quarantine the media for 2 weeks and this crisis is over.
If the headline has the word could in it, its bullshit.
Yup. Lot of that sort of speculative so called news lately. Could. Might. Alarms should go off when you see those words.
we also have cpap/bipap and heated hi flow O2. in addition there are a couple drug combinations looking promising. I have not heard of south korea or hong kong running out of vents and there was the whole diamond princess experience. The penetration of this does not look to be that high. Prepare for the worst but there is reason to hope this will not be as drastic as forecast
DONT GO TO THE HOSPITAL. If you can help it. You are better off in bed. Take no drugs. Stay in bed. Take vitamins, especially D and Zinc. Take liquids as needed. And watch TV. Moving will use oxygen. So don’t move, just sleep. The hopital will not help you. If you can hold your breath for 10 seconds. You are fine. If you can’t call your doctor from your bed. But don’t use your oxygen. Don’t move. Breath deeply.
Like I keep saying, I am reminded of the afternoon I saw a dozen malaria patients. Seems to me the doctors seeing this for the first time come away seriously impressed. If that guy on Tucker is serious about harvesting antibodies from the recovered to keep the mildly ill off vents someone has been seriously impressed.
What is a blue person?
NYT = fear mongering at its finest.
Not percentages of infected really, as it will likely infect a whole lot of us.
It’s the percentage who become ill enough to need hospitalization that matters.
Someone who arrives in the ER with that color. The event mobilizes every idle resource in the ER. Its like the Forward Air Support guy hollering Broken Arrow over the radio. It means this person is going to die right now if all of us dont do everything we can and we still probably will fail.
