Coronavirus hits all 50 US states as death toll rises

The deadly coronavirus has now hit all 50 states in the US as West Virginia reported its first case of the infection on Tuesday.

Announcing West Virginia's first Covid-19 patient, Governor Jim Justice said: "We knew this was coming."

New York City said it was considering a lockdown similar to one in the San Francisco Bay area.

There have so far been 108 deaths in the US from coronavirus and more than 6,300 confirmed cases nationwide.

Globally, there are about 200,000 cases and nearly 8,000 people have died.

...Pentagon chief Mark Esper said the US military would make available five million respirator masks and up to 2,000 ventilators to the US health department.

He said the military would also open its 14 certified coronavirus labs to test non-military personnel.

Track the virus globally - note that the lethality in the USA has gone down to 1.65%

Total number of cases are nearly 6000 with nearly 100 fatalities

17 have recovered so far in the USA -- small numbers, but the USA has only started on the curve, so both affected and recovered (and dead) will rise.

Meanwhile the political landscape is ripe for everybody.

Trump, ahead and leading the nation. (ya I know the media....)

Bernie gets to call for every national program he ever wanted.

Biden gets to make short announcements with a minimum of scrutiny.

And local political dictators calling for whatever they decide
is best for all.

This is where president Trump needs to cement his rally-ish likeability, into proven leadership in a time of crisis.

A precise estimate of the case fatality rate is therefore impossible at present.

The case fatality rate (CFR) represents the proportion of cases who eventually die from a disease.

Once an epidemic has ended, it is calculated with the formula: deaths / cases.

But while an epidemic is still ongoing, as it is the case with the current novel coronavirus outbreak, this formula is, at the very least, "naïve" and can be "misleading if, at the time of analysis, the outcome is unknown for a non negligible proportion of patients." [8]

In other words, current deaths belong to a total case figure of the past, not to the current case figure in which the outcome (recovery or death) of a proportion (the most recent cases) hasn't yet been determined.

Once there is more testing the mortality rate will go way down. It is very infectious and a lot of people have already been exposed.

How about telling everyone over 65 to stay inside. They’re but 20% of the population and not all that productive. It keeps them protected from the young and yet allows the young, 80% of us, to go about the business of living.

Truth be told, smart old people are careful during the flu season anyway.

Every year I say the same thing about the masses crowding the Ed for a flu test. It’s some status thing. I had a positive flu is something to brag about. By the time it was detected, you infected others and are 3/4 way to recovery. What rational person does that... excluding high risk patients. 50 percent of my immediate family is high risk... and They avoid the sick crowded Ed. Self care at home and we enjoy our sick days together.
