CHICAGO For centuries, 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit was said to be the average, normal body temperature. Its not.

ok. DC can do what it wants. The widely accepted medical definition of fever is 38C
My temp usually runs between 97.5 and 98.2
98.6F means I have a low grade fever. Mine has always been in the low 97’s as well. I’ve learned to go by touch more than a thermometer. Kid feeling bad and has a warm back and back of neck, means fever.
I’ve always had a normal temperature of 97.8
Keeping with the times I guess. Now we can name our pronouns AND our temperature. No more being caged in outdated norms by the patriarchy.
Maybe our measuring devices are slightly more accurate than the ones we used in the 1800’s
“ok. DC can do what it wants. The widely accepted medical definition of fever is 38C”
Set in 1898 AND now outdated. Leading authorities are now at 100 dF with some suggesting we can go down to 99.5.
I can only imagine. Doctors are probably expecting a 100-degree fever, not 98-99 degrees, which is probably high for you.
The body has an unbelievable number of controlled subsystems and there is big variability in each of them all day and night long. I’ve been doing a lot of self analysis of my sleep using a CPAP machine, a logging pulse oximeter, a motion sensor (an “actigraph”). I also use a blood pressure cuff and glucose monitor.
Every reading jumps up and down all the time. It’s no surprise temperature would do the same.
It is amazing how all the different subsystems work to control their operation within their own target “set point” and individual operating limits.
Me either. The only time it gets checked is in the doc’s office. We don’t even own a thermometer.
I just went to buy one a couple days ago and they are sold out everywhere.
That’s a good way to think about it... Just like blood pressure and all those other readings fluctuate, so would body temperature.
“ok. DC can do what it wants. The widely accepted medical definition of fever is 38C”
CDC is using 100.0. WHO is using 99.5 (37.5 C.)
“Mine has almost been in the 97s.”
Same for me. If I’m in the 98s I have a fever.
Normal?
Quit lying to yourself!!
:>)
My temp has always seemed to be around 97.4 or so. So it was never near 98.6.
