The outbreak of the novel coronavirus prompted the top Texas criminal appeals court on Monday to stay for 60 days the scheduled execution of a man condemned for killing his family. The Texas Court of Criminal Appeals rejected all grounds of John William Hummel's appeal but said it would postpone the scheduled Wednesday execution "in light of the current health crisis and the enormous resources needed to address the execution."
One of the issues that Michael Mowla, Hummel's attorney, had raised in his efforts to stop the execution was a concern that the process involved with putting Hummel to death "may itself assist in spreading COVID-19."
A number of people either take part or witness the execution in the death chamber at the state penitentiary in Huntsville, including correctional officers, attorneys, physicians and family members or friends of the inmate and of the victims.
"Gathering all these people in one location presents a substantial risk of transmission of COVID-19/Coronavirus if anyone is infected," Mowla wrote in a petition to the appeals court last week.

That’s got to go as one of the stupidest things I’ve heard in the past few weeks. And that’s saying something.
I can see where this is going. “ Gee officer I was speeding home to quarantine myself”.
One of the witnesses might forget to cough into the crook of his elbow.
If a dem was president, headlines would read: “COVID-19 Virus Saves Life”
Well don’t gather but have the execution on Skype or whatever.
Creative excuse. Attorneys are paid to try anything for their client.
Maybe this guy could volunteer to be injected with the WuFlu. For science.

Great science fiction idea. But the virus mutates and he is turned into an evil Superman.
So, we have a court making a decision on purely policy rather than legal grounds.
Put him in a body bag with an airtube first, then execute him.
WTF?
Finish him off already.
I saw a ScyFi video recently that kind of touched on the same theme.
A guy murdered a young girl and his sentence was especially grisly. It began with the amputation of his left arm then he was used as an example to school kids what can happen if you commit crimes.
Then they took one of his legs.......Then they took the other leg.....Then they took his other arm.......then his ears......When there was nothing left to amputate, they started harvesting his organs.
“Enormous resources”????
What? A guy with a pistol and a single round ought to do it.
And maybe a couple more to carry the body to the dumpster.

The Judges should have Ordered the Defendant to be present, then Stand before the Court, and Promptly SHOOT HIM TO DEATH!!
douse him with gasoline suspend him by his feet set his shirt on fire, flames go up, smoke goes up, so he can enjoy all the pain without smoke inhalation or oxygen depravity
