NEW YORK - As he campaigns for president, Joe Bidens moderate approach to governing often fails to excite his partys most passionate voters. But on the debate stage, as the nation wrestled with the consequences of a frightening pandemic, Bidens pragmatism broke through in ways that affirmed why he has become the front-runner for the Democratic nomination.
The former vice president and senator, who has spent the last four decades as a Washington insider, faced off Sunday night against Sen. Bernie Sanders and his burn-it-down progressive politics in the first one-on-one debate of the Democratic Partys 2020 primary season.
It was Bidens first chance to show how he might be seen in a face-off with President Trump. He was crisper in his answers than he had been in forums with multiple candidates and he was more focused when framing his differences with Sanders, who used the evening as perhaps a last, best shot at slowing Bidens march.
Biden showed flashes of the fighting spirit that first signaled his presidential mettle when he sought the White House the first time, more than 30 years ago.
He put Sanders on the defensive repeatedly, including for favorable comments the senator had made about authoritarian regimes in Cuba and other Latin American countries. And he defiantly beat back attacks against his own record on the 2008 economic bailout, his support for the Iraq War, and his past willingness to cut Social Security as part of a deficit-reduction package.
Yet the night will be most likely remembered for a virus that has suddenly turned American politics, and American life, upside down, and in the process, may have driven voters even closer to the candidate who represented far more experience and far less risk.
This is a crisis, Biden said. Were at war with a virus.

He is part of the problem
Note the Associated “Press” headline if its a Democrat - Biden SHINES. If it were Trump, there would be some reference to a minor slipup or other negative comment.
“... Bidens pragmatism shines...”
The only “shining” going on was the bullsh*t that he spewed...
.. and the sweat on his forehead from trying to remember his pre-written script.
APoo sycophants are about to declare Biden has already been the President-elect of the United States.
The article was drafted prior to the debate and quotes added before printing.
Well, this just pegged my BS meter.
I agree with you....it was probably pre-written by a week and supposed to help jump-start Joe’s second-wind. What one can take out of the debate....there’s like ten different versions of Joe, and you can never be sure who you are talking about or how the policy ideas work.
AP = Absolutely Propaganda
I wonder if this ‘writer’ wiped the stuff off his chin before or after publication ?
I forced myself to watch much of the debate last night. Biden did, indeed, outshine Sanders. That is, outshine, as in a flashlight with weak batteries outshines a birthday candle, all the while there is a “shining city on a hill” of light over on the other side of the race.
That said. Sanders was a one trick pony. His pat answers to every question always devolved to “Orange man bad because of evil businesses but Socialism cures all.”
Biden had his share of stumbles. In nearly every sentence he would struggle to find an appropriate word, here or there. To me, this is a sure sign of senility’s onset. Nevertheless, he was aggressive, on point (always liberal points), and focused on the question. This was a sure contrast with Sanders who had only one answer to every question.
The media, dnc, deep state, are all in. They know they can control a fool like Joe Biden. Theyre not so sure about controlling Bernie Sanders.
Biden told everyone how incompetent and awful Trump’s coronavirus plan was, then submitted the exact same ‘plan’
I agree.
Sanders seemed unprepared for some of the questions.
Biden stayed on point. Based on what I’ve seen here on Free Republic, I was watching for obvious signs of dementia, but saw only signs of old age.
I think the dementia thing is overblown. And I know the Dem voters will ignore anything like that.
We will be well served not to underestimate Biden and do everything we can to get out the Republican vote.
They don’t even try to hide the shameless propagandizing anymore.
crazy Bernie...Its windy!
quid pro joe...Not, its thursday
crazy Bernie...me too, lets get some beer.
Bernie wailed against the 1% again, hopelessly out of touch with the corona panic. It’s all over.
Imagine the world of SH*T we'd be in if either of these clowns were running our response to the pandemic!
Question: When was the last time anyone heard the dems screaming about Open Borders?
It was the best he’s done this entire cycle. Bernie is dead.
They sure are polishing that turd!
